The Power of STRESS

2 Corinthians 1:8-11

February 6, 2022

How can the power of stress work for my good?

2 Corinthians 1:8-9a (NIV)—We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about the troubles we experienced in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt we had received the sentence of death.

  1. Stress teaches us to rely on .

2 Corinthians 1:9b (NIV) — But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves . . .

  1. Stress teaches us to rely on .

2 Corinthians 1:9bc — But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.

2 Corinthians 1:9 (TLB) — “We felt we were doomed to die and saw how powerless we were to help ourselves; but that was good, for then we put everything into the hands of God, who alone could save us . . .”

2 Corinthians 1:9 (MSG) — As it turned out, it was the best thing that could have happened. Instead of trusting in our own strength or wits to get out of it, we were forced to trust God totally . . .

2 Corinthians 1:10 (NIV) — He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us . . .

2 Corinthians 1:10 (NIV) — He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us again. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us . . .

  1. There is power in

2 Corinthians 1:10b-11a (NIV) — On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, 11 as you help us by your prayers.

2 Corinthians 1:11 (MSG) — “You and your prayers are part of the rescue operation.”

“A Christian fellowship lives and exists by the intercession of its members for one another, or it collapses.”  – Dietrich Bonhoeffer

2 Corinthians 1:11b (NIV) — Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
