What Does the Future Hold?
When Will Jesus Return?

I. Introduction

A. Matthew 24:36 (NAS) “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.”

B. Matthew 24:42 (NAS) “Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming.”

II. When Will Jesus Return?

A. Matthew 24:1-3 (NAS) 1Jesus came out from the temple and was going away when His disciples came up to point out the temple buildings to Him. 2And He said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Truly I say to you, not one stone here will be left upon another, which will not be torn down.” 3As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

B. Mark 13:1-2 (NAS) 1As He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, behold what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” 2And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another which will not be torn down.”

1. We learn that is not by the same things we are!

C. Mark 12:41-44 (NAS) 41And He sat down opposite the treasury, and began observing how the people were putting money into the treasury; and many rich people were putting in large sums. 42A poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which amount to a cent. 43Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury;  44for they all put in out of their surplus, but she, out of her poverty, put in all she owned, all she had to live on.”

1. After Jesus came, the meeting place on earth between and was Jesus Christ, the God-Man!

2. is the meeting place between God and man!

D. Matthew 24:3 (NAS) As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

1. What is it, if it was taken from you, would spell the of the for you?

E. As a follower of Jesus, our security, our trust, and our joy, is found in !

F. Matthew 24:3 (NAS) “Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

G. Matthew 24:4-8 (NAS) 4And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. 5For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will mislead many. 6You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end. 7For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes. 8But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs.”

H. Matthew 24:6 (NAS) “You will be hearing of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not frightened, for those things must take place, but that is not yet the end.”

1. Our focus is supposed to be on the that’s coming! The New Creation!

I. Matthew 24:14 (NAS) “This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come.”

J. Matthew 24:15-21 (NAS) 15“Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), 16then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains; 17whoever is on the housetop must not go down to get the things out that are in his house. 18Whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. 19But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20But pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath. 21For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will.”

1. This Antiochus Epiphanes became a prototype of all the anti-, anti- rulers throughout history.

K. Matthew 24:16 (NAS) “Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains.”

1. Jesus is telling us that there will be all kinds of events like this between His coming and His coming!

L. Matthew 24:22 (NAS) “Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.”

1. No matter what happens, is in !

2. You can tell whether or not you believe in the control and Sovereignty of God by asking yourself two things:

a. Is there anything other than that ultimately determines my ?

b. Is there anything other than that I ultimately ?

3. Don’t try to when Jesus is going to .

4. Focus on these two things:

a. returning!

b. is in control!
