The Holy Spirit

John 14:23–26

23 …“If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 The one who doesn’t love me will not keep my words. The word that you hear is not mine but is from the Father who sent me.

25 “I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you. 26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have told you.

John 16:7–11

…It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send him to you. When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: About sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; 11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

John 16:13–15

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth. For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. 15 Everything the Father has is mine. This is why I told you that he takes from what is mine and will declare it to you.

John 20:19–22

When it was evening on that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because they feared the Jews. Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

20 Having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord.

21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, I also send you.” 22 After saying this, he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

First Thought: The Holy Spirit not the or member of the Trinity.

The Holy Spirit has been and from the beginning.

Genesis 1:1–2

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness covered the surface of the watery depths, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

1.The Holy Spirit of God is a person, not a .

He has a mind. (Romans 8:27)

He has a will. (1 Cor. 12:11)

He has emotions such as love and joy. (Romans 15:30, Gal 5:22)

He Comforts. (Acts 9:31)

He speaks. (Hebrews 3:7, 1 Timothy 4:1)

He teaches. (1 Cor. 2:13)

He can feel sorrow. (Ephesians 4:30)

He can be insulted. (Hebrews 10:29)

He can be resisted. (Acts 7:51)

He can be lied to. (Acts 5:1-11)

2. What God accomplishes on , He does by the Holy Spirit.

John 16:8–11

1 Corinthians 12:4–7,11

Now there are different gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different ministries, but the same Lord. And there are different activities, but the same God works all of them in each person. A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good… 11 One and the same Spirit is active in all these, distributing to each person as he wills.

3. Before Jesus’ life, death and resurrection, the Holy Spirit came certain people for certain purposes.

4. Because of what Jesus has done, The Holy Spirit can live all of God’s people.

John 14:15–17

“If you love me, you will keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever. 17 He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn’t see him or know him. .

5. It is a powerful, thing to have God’s Spirit in us.

1 Corinthians 3:16–17

Don’t you yourselves know that you are God’s temple and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is holy, and that is what you are.

Final Thought: To have more of the Spirit is to have more of God.
