Reviving The Family

Ephesians 6:1-4

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land. Fathers, don’t stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Parallel passage: Colossians 3:20–21 (CSB): Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. 21 Fathers, do not exasperate your children, so that they won’t become discouraged.

Big Idea: Few things in life are as difficult or  rewarding as family. The gospel is good news for the home.

  1. FOR CHILDREN, OBEDIENCE SHOULD BE A RESPONSE, NOT A RESPONSE.

Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right.

-As parents we have to expect what God expects.

Proverbs 19:18 NIV

“Discipline your children, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to their death.”

  1. WE NEVER THE DIVINE CALL TO HONOR OUR PARENTS.

Ephesians 6:2-3 Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.

  1. THE PARENTS SET IN THEIR  HOMES WILL SHAPE THE OF THIER CHILDREN TOWARD LIFE AND GOD.

Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, don’t stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Proverbs 22:24-25  Don’t make friends with an angry person, and don’t be a companion of a hot-tempered one, or you will learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.

4. Our goal is parents is to raise adults, not kids.

Ephesians 6:4 Fathers, don’t stir up anger in your children, but bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Deuteronomy 4:9–11 Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves, so that you don’t forget the things your eyes have seen and so that they don’t slip from your mind as long as you live. Teach them to your children and your grandchildren. 10 The day you stood before the Lord your God at Horeb, the Lord said to me, ‘Assemble the people before me, and I will let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days they live on the earth and may instruct their children.’ 11 You came near and stood at the base of the mountain, a mountain blazing with fire into the heavens and enveloped in a totally black cloud.

Final thought: The only way family truly works is through the grace of God. We must give and accept God’s grace.

Titus 2:11,14 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people…He gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people for his own possession, eager to do good works.
