All The Feels: I’m Overwhelmed

Psalm 73:21–28 (CSB) 21 When I became embittered and my innermost being was wounded, 22 I was stupid and didn’t understand; I was an unthinking animal toward you. 23 Yet I am always with you; you hold my right hand. 24 You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me up in glory.,25 Who do I have in heaven but you? And I desire nothing on earth but you. 26 My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart, my portion forever. 27 Those far from you will certainly perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. 28 But as for me, God’s presence is my good. I have made the Lord God my refuge, so I can tell about all you do.

The emotion of overwhelm paralyzes our ability to daily life.

Overwhelm doesn’t usually result from one big thing, but many things.

10 Scriptural Ways to Handle Overwhelm

  1. Don’t stay where you are: Grow in your of spiritual principles.

Proverbs 24:5 A wise warrior is better than a strong one, and a man of knowledge than one of strength…

Psalm 119:9,11 (NIV) How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word… I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.

  1. Take care of , because no one else can do that for you.

1 Kings 19:4–7  …He sat down under a broom tree and prayed that he might die. He said, “I have had enough! Lord, take my life, for I’m no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down and slept under the broom tree.

Suddenly, an angel touched him. The angel told him, “Get up and eat.” 6 Then he looked, and there at his head was a loaf of bread baked over hot stones, and a jug of water. So he ate and drank and lay down again. 7 Then the angel of the Lord returned for a second time and touched him. He said, “Get up and eat, or the journey will be too much for you.”

  1. Keep , because we’re all weaker alone.

Colossians 3:12–13 Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, 13 bearing with one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a grievance against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you are also to forgive.

Galatians 6:2 Carry one another’s burdens; in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.

  1. Walk by faith in God’s and .

Hebrews 11:33-34 (NLT) By faith these people overthrew kingdoms, ruled with justice, and received what God had promised them. They shut the mouths of lions, 34 quenched the flames of fire, and escaped death by the edge of the sword. Their weakness was turned to strength. They became strong in battle and put whole armies to flight.

Romans 4:20–21 He did not waver in unbelief at God’s promise but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 because he was fully convinced that what God had promised, he was also able to do.

  1. your way to joy.

Psalm 16:11 (ESV) You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

Psalm 43:4 (NLT) There I will go to the altar of God, to God—the source of all my joy. I will praise you with my harp, O God, my God!

  1. and allow God to

Luke 22:42, 44-46 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me—nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done”… 44 Being in anguish, he prayed more fervently, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. 45 When he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you won’t fall into temptation.”

  • Praying in the .

Jude 1:20 (MSG) But you, dear friends, carefully build yourselves up in this most holy faith by praying in the Holy Spirit, staying right at the center of God’s love, keeping your arms open and outstretched, ready for the mercy of our Master, Jesus Christ. This is the unending life, the real life!

  1. God with a whole-hearted commitment.

2 Chronicles 16:9 (NLT) The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. What a fool you have been! From now on you will be at war.”

  1. Watch your .

Proverbs 18:21 (NLT) The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

  1. Acknowledge your , and depend on God’s .

2 Corinthians 12:7b–10 (CSB) …so that I would not exalt myself, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to torment me so that I would not exalt myself. 8 Concerning this, I pleaded with the Lord three times that it would leave me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is perfected in weakness.”

Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me. 10 So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
