Living Water

John 4:1-15

John 20:31

The strict Rabbis forbade a Rabbi to greet a woman in public. A Rabbi might not even speak to his own wife or daughter or sister in public. There were even Pharisees who were called ‘the bruised and bleeding Pharisees’ because they shut their eyes when they saw a woman on the street and so walked into walls and houses! -Barclay

John 7:37-39

Jeremiah 2:13

1 Corinthians 2:14

Matthew 4:4

Psalm 100:2

Hebrews 10:24-25

Philippians 4:6-7

3 Points about Living Water

  1. Every human thirsts for it
  2. It’s continually available
  3. It brings life to those around us

Life Group Questions:

  1. The character and boldness of Jesus is clearly evident in his interactions with the Samaritan woman at the well. What about His approach surprises you?
  2. What do you think Jesus meant by living water? How can we access it? What alternative sources of water have you drunk from in hopes of bringing life?
  3. John said that “Jesus was not ignorant of the status of this woman, but He pushed through barriers of oppression and social status to a larger perspective”.  What are some barriers or tensions currently in our shared culture/society/world that Jesus might push through?

As you set aside some time to pray this evening, thank Jesus for revealing His heart toward us as He did with the woman at the well.  Ask God to fill you with more of the living water only He offers.  Then pray for ways that God might use you to impact others in the world who desperately need healing and life.
