Series: Victory Through Prayer                                     Topic: Pray Through

Text: “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! (Matthew 7:7-11)

21 And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. 22 And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.” (Matthew 21:21-22)

pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or thinkaccording to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. (Ephesians 3:20-21)

Examples of persistent prayers

Elijah raised the widow’s son1 Kings 17

Elijah Prayed for Rain – 1 Kings 18:

Daniel saves an Oppressed People – Daniel 10:1, a word was revealed to

Moses and people of Israel war against Amalek – Exodus 17

Esther/Mordecai saved the Jews from annihilation (Esther 3-4)

Hannah from barrenness to fruitfulness –  I Samuel 1 & 2

Jesus – Luke 6:12, Luke 4:1-2, Mark 14:32-41, Luke 11:5-10

Why don’t people pray?

13 When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, 14 if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. (2 Chronicles 7:13-14)

  1. Pride – (opposite of humble themselves)
  2. Ignorance/complacency – (opposite of pray)
  3. Idolatry – (opposite of seek God’s face).
  4. Sin – (opposite of repentance, to turn from wicked way)

What we should do

  • Humble ourselves by getting rid of pride (selfishness and selflessness)
  • Pray – refuse to be ignorant/complacent of God’s word/promises
  • Seek God’s face – desire God more than anything else the world offers…
  • Turn from our wicked ways – shun sin and inherent proclivities that displeases God
