SERMON NOTES:

Oliver James:

“Consumption holds out the false promise that an internal lack can be fixed by an external means. We medicate our misery through buying things. “People no longer bought soap to make them clean; they bought the promise that it would make them beautiful. In the virtual world of ads, toothpaste was not to kill bacteria but to create white teeth. Cars were for prestige rather than travel. Even food stuff, such as oranges, were for vitality, not nutrition. Needs were replaced by the confected wants that people did not know they had.” “What makes this country great is the creation of wants and desires. The creation of dissatisfaction with the old and the outmoded.”

John Dick:

“I am here this day, and would not change my lot with the greatest in the world. I lay down my life willingly and cheerfully for Christ and his cause, and I heartily forgive all my enemies including my executioner. I beseech you to come to Christ, for He will not disappoint you. I say trust in the Lord, and He will support or strengthen you in whatever trouble or affliction you may meet with. Now blessed be the Lord, here is the sacrifice and freewill offering. Adieu, farewell all friends.”

  1. THE  OF

John Piper:

“Have you ever considered that the Ten Commandments begin and end with virtually the same commandment? ‘You shall have no other gods before me’ and ‘You shall not covet.’ These are almost equivalent commands. Coveting is desiring anything other than God in a way that betrays a loss of contentment and satisfaction in Him. Covetousness is a heart divided between two gods.”

Philippians 4:11-12

Mark Twain:

“You don’t know just what it is you really want. But it fairly makes ache, because you want it so.”

Wallace Stevens:

“Even in contentment, I feel the need of some imperishable bliss.”

Anonymous:

“It was spring, but it was summer that I wanted. The warm days and the great outdoors. It was summer, but it was fall that I wanted. The colorful leaves and the cool, dry air. It was fall, but it was winter that I wanted. The beautiful snow and the joy of the holiday season. It was winter, but it was spring I wanted. The warmth and the blossoming of nature. I was a child, and it was adulthood that I wanted. The freedom and the respect. I was twenty, but it was thirty that I wanted. To be mature and sophisticated. I was middle-aged but it was twenty that I wanted. The youth and the free spirit. I was retired, but it was middle-aged that I wanted. The presence of mind without limitations. My life was over, and I never got what I wanted.”

Ephesians 5:3-5

2. THE  OF

M. Robert Mulholland:

“Scripture is also clear in its witness to the fact that only God can liberate us from our bondage, heal our brokenness, cleanse us from our uncleanness and bring life out of our deadness. We cannot do it by ourselves. Thus spiritual formation is the experience of being shaped by God toward wholeness as we find our satisfaction in Him.”

C. S. Lewis:

“Creatures are born with desires; they are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hungry, there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim, there is such a thing as water. We feel sexual desire, there is such a thing as sex. And if I find in myself a desire that no experience in this world can satisfy, the only probable explanation is that I was made for another world and the earthly pleasures that I see were not designed to fulfill but to arouse my desire for that place.”

3. THE  OF

Philippians 4:13; Philippians 4:19-20

Psalm 73:25

Augustine:

“O Lord, thou hast made us for thyself and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in thee.”

Hebrews 13:5

Romans 8:32

Psalm 16:11
