SERMON NOTES:
Jonathan Edwards:
“Where have we any command in the Bible laid in stronger terms and in a more peremptory urgent manner than the command of giving to the poor.”
Matthew 25:34-40
- THE WE LEARN FROM THE POOR
Augustus Toplady:
“Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to Thy cross I cling; naked, come to Thee for dress;
helpless, look to Thee for grace; foul, I to the fountain fly; wash me, Savior, or I die.”
Matthew 19:23-24
Simone Weil:
“Humanism was not wrong in thinking that truth, beauty, liberty, and equality are of infinite value, but in thinking man can get them himself without grace.”
2. THE TO CARE FOR THE POOR
Deuteronomy 15:4-5
Luke 4:16-21
Roman emperor Julian:
“These impious Galileans, (i.e., Christians) support not only their poor but ours as well; everyone can see that our own people lack aid from us.”
3. THE NEEDED TO TAKE CARE OF THE POOR
John Stott:
“What are we supposed to do with our goods? What does the bible say? Does the bible say, we must become poor materially? No it does not. It doesn’t really tell us that we have to do that. On the other hand does it say that we can simply stay rich and just give away a little to charity here and there? No we cannot do that either. We do not have to become poor nor can we simply stay rich.”
