SERMON NOTES:

Deuteronomy 8:2

Matthew Poole:

“What does ‘the whole way’ mean? The whole way, that is, all the events which befell you in the way — the miraculous protection, deliverances, provisions, instructions, which God gave you and which all the
frequent and severe punishments of your disobediences to know what was in your heart that you might yourself discover and to others that infidelity, inconsistency, hypocrisy, apostasy, rebellion, and perverseness which lay hidden in your heart. The discoveries, thereof, was of singular use, both to them and to the church of God in all succeeding ages.”

  1. GOD  UD TO  IN THE WILDERNESS

Deuteronomy 8:3-4

Hebrews 3:7-11

C. S. Lewis:

“If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing. I must take care, on the one hand, never to despise, or be unthankful for, these earthly blessings, and on the other, never to mistake them for the something else of which they are only a kind of copy, or echo, or mirage. I must keep alive in myself the desire for my true country.”

2. GOD  IN THE WILDERNESS

Deuteronomy 8:2

Lady Culross:

“Since God has put His work into your weak hands, look not for long ease here: You must feel the full weight of your calling: a weak man with a strong God.”

3. GOD  US TO  THE WILDERNESS

Deuteronomy 1:29-31

Hebrews 4:15

Rhea F. Miller:

“I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold,
I’d rather be His than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands,
I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand.

Than to be the king of a vast domain
or be held in sin’s dread sway.
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.

I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause,
I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause;
I’d rather have Jesus than worldwide fame,
I’d rather be true to His holy name.

Then to be the king of a vast domain
or be held in sin’s dread sway.
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.”
