Help My Relationships!
Less Selfish, More Selfless

“Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple

and take up their  and follow me.’”

Matthew 16:24

“The  among you must be a .”

Matthew 23:11 (NLT)

Big idea:
Behind every  relationship are two people trying to put the  first.

Behind almost every  relationship are two people trying to put  first.

“If you’ve  at all out of following Christ, if his love has made  in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit to you, if you , if you care—then : Agree with each other, , be deep-spirited friends.”

Philippians 2:1-2 (MSG)

“Do out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.”

Philippians 2:3-4

Two Negative Attitudes to Eliminate and
One Positive Attitude to Cultivate

Two attitudes to eliminate:

:

carries the idea of competition and rivalry in a relationship.

Key Question: Am I spending too much energy trying to be right in a relationship?

 :

translates to “empty glory”; empty self-promotion.

Key Question: Do I come across as needing to be self-important and a self-promoter?

“Seeking To Win Followers”

Rather, in value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of        you to the interests of the others.”

Philippians 2:3-4

One attitude to cultivate:

“Humility is not thinking , it is thinking about .”                                                                                     – C.S. Lewis

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Philippians 2:4 ESV

Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Philippians 2:3-4

“Value others” – to view the other person as if they are the most important person in the room.

“In your with one another, have the as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he by becoming obedient to death— even death on a cross!” Philippians 2:5-8
