Introduction

Christ’s life and example as our high priest. (Hebrews 5:7-10)

  1. Jesus offered deep, heartfelt prayers of anguish. (Hebrews 5:7)
  2. Jesus learned obedience and was made complete through suffering. (Hebrews 5:8-9a)
  3. Jesus is our savior and high priest. (Hebrews 5:9b-10)

QUESTIONS

  • How did Christ’s suffering, crying, and tears help him fill the requirements of being our high priest? How did Christ’s earthly experiences “perfect” Him as a high priest?

  • Read 2 Corinthians 1:3-5. How does what Paul says relate to this section in Hebrews?

  • Read 1 Peter 3:18. How does what Peter says relate to or inform this section in Hebrews?

Our need to grow in maturity. (Hebrews 5:11-14)

  1. You are not advancing because you are dull of hearing. (Hebrews 5:11)

  2. You should be teachers, but you still need help with your “ABC’s”. (Hebrews 5:12)

  3. You should be mature, but you are still an infant. (Hebrews 5:13)

  4. The Solution: Maturity requires training by constant practice. (Hebrews 5:14b)

QUESTIONS:

  • What dies this passage tell us about who should become teachers? Why is talking to others about the Bible a mark of maturity?
  • What might be some of the causes that keep people stuck as spiritual infants?
  • Are you growing in Christ as much as you would like? In what area of life do you feel stuck? In the times when you experienced a lag in your spiritual growth, what was the cause? What kept you from progressing spiritually?
  • What are some practical steps a man can take to train his spiritual senses and sharpen his spiritual discernment?
