“Our Worthy Walk with Unified Ministry Mindedness”

June 28, 2020 / Ephesians 4:2,3,4,11,12

  • QUIET your mind and soul before the LORD — “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10)
  • COMMIT to obedience: Commit to doing whatever God will say to you in this message — “to obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 15:22)

I.  The of the Believer (Ephesians 1:1-3:21)

Our goal is to consider “Our Worthy Walk” and seek to grow in our understanding of how to “Walk with the Lord to the praise of His glory.”

Question from Ch. 1-3: “What it is to be a Christian?”

II.  The of the Believer (Ephesians 4:1-6:9)

Question from Ch. 4-6: “How to live as a Christian?”

In the first 3 chapters we learn why we should have an unparalleled devotion to God. In chapter 1 we see our riches in Christ. Then in chapter 2 Paul explains our reconciliation to Christ. Finally, in chapter 3, Paul speaks of the revelation of Christ’s love for us. We see how a transforming understanding of these doctrinal truths lead to a lifestyle of devotion to God as we pursue this development of Christlikeness through our diligent study of His Word. This is followed by the display of Christlikeness as we put into practice these truths of God in both our walk and warfare.

A.  Walk Worthy before God (Ephesians 4:1-32)

 1.  Walk (Ephesians 4:1)

Romans 12:1-2 I beseech [beg] you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed [changed into something useful] by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

We note that our understanding of the principles of God’s Word will lead to the practice of God’s ways.

2.  Walk in Unity—Your in Christ (Ephesians 4:2-6)

Paul teaches us to consider the needed posture of our heart to be that of unity.

Having Biblical unity speaks of having the same mindset in pursuing the same mission (cf. Philippians 2:2-3).

1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak [agree] the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.

In order for our church family to move forward to “the praise of God’s glory” we must have the right of Unity being that of Humility.

a.  Our View of —“lowliness” (Ephesians 4:2)

“…but in lowliness of mind…” – This speaks of having a deep sense of one’s own littleness. It results in having a low opinion of owns own opinion (Cf. Romans 12:3).

Romans 12:16 Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

As pride promotes , humility promotes .

b.  Our View of —“meekness” (Ephesians 4:2)

Meekness” is power .

c.  Our View of —“longsuffering, forbearing” (Ephesians 4:2-3)

“…with longsuffering, …” – This word, “longsuffering” speaks of with respect of persons (Wuest).

“…forbearing one another in love;” – This word translated, “forbearing” carries the idea of .

Romans 12:10 Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another; (Cf. 1 Corinthians 13:4)

d.  Our View of the (Ephesians 4:4-6)

Romans 12:4-5 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: 5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

John 17:21 That they all may be one; as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be one in Us: that the world may believe that Thou hast sent Me.

3.  Walk in Ministry—Your in Christ (Ephesians 4:11-12)

God “inspired”—He breathed out His Word through the apostles and prophets. Through these men, the Holy Spirit gave us God’s Word (cf. 2 Peter 1:21).

The great responsibility in spiritual leadership is “watching for [the] souls” of the flock. It is keeping careful watch over the spiritual needs of the flock so as to care for their greatest needs. (Acts 20:28; Hebrews 13:17)

POINT OF ACTION: Our worthy walk is marked by a unified ministry. With a renewed vision, we must have a right view of ourselves, God, others, and the Church. “Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” God has provided the church with gifted ministers for the purpose of gospel ministry. Through the ministry of God’s Word, every believer is equipped and edified for and expected to be involved in the “work of the ministry.”
