“The Warfare of the Believer—His Instruments” (Part 2)

October 25, 2020 / Ephesians 6:14

Make A QUIET COMMITMENT:

  • QUIET your mind and soul before the LORD — “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10)
  • COMMIT to obedience: Commit to doing whatever God will say to you in this message — “to obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 15:22)

I.     The Wealth of the Believer (Ephesians 1:1-3:21)

II.    The Walk of the Believer (Ephesians 4:1-6:9)

We note that our understanding of the principles of God’s Word will lead to the practice of God’s ways.

III.   The Warfare of the Believer (Ephesians 6:10-20)

A.  Introduction

B.  Instruction: how to stand fast in the battle(Ephesians 6:10-12)

We must follow the instructions for the battle: being invincible with God’s power, intentionally prepared, immovable being protected by God’s armor, and informed about the perpetrator of the battle.

C.  Instruments: how to face the battle (Ephesians 6:13-17)

 1.  God’s Precept for our stability in Warfare (v. 13)

“…that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day,…” The word “evil” is the Geek word, “ponēros” similar to our word pernicious, which speaks of something that is malicious or wicked, causing insidious harm or ruin. This “evil day” is the day of temptation.

2.  God’s Protection for our security in Warfare (Ephesians 6:14-17a)

Ephesians 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Romans 13:14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

i.  He is rooted in truth(Ephesians 6:14a)

Isaiah 11:5 And righteousness shall be the girdle of His loins, and faithfulness the girdle of His reins.

“…having your loins girt about with truth, …”  To “girt about” implies preparation or readiness for an activity

Truth” – speaks of content that is in contrast to falsehood. It also can be defined as truthfulness in terms of sincerity or honesty which is opposed to hypocrisy. There is also an underlying implication of commitment.

a)  He is diligent in his preparation

Ephesians 4:21 If so be that ye have heard Him, and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus:

Colossians 2:6-7 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in Him: 7 Rooted and built up in Him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

Ephesians 3:17-18 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 May be able to comprehend [grasp] with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height [the vastness and completeness of God’s love];

1 Peter 1:13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope [confident trust] to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

2 Timothy 2:3-4 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

b)  He is determined in his pursuits

1 Corinthians 9:24 Know ye not that they which run in a race run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain [the prize / run in order to win].

Hebrews 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

c)  He is dedicated to truthfulness in his practice

Ephesians 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into Him in all things, Which is the head, even Christ:

Ephesians 4:25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another [one body in Christ].

Philippians 1:10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;

2 Timothy 4:6-7 For I am now ready to be offered [as a drink offering], and the time of my departure [imp. his death] is at hand. 7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course [the race], I have kept the faith:

POINT OF ACTION: Our warfare is fought with the instruments of God. Our protection for the spiritual battles of life begins with truth. This phrase, “having your loins girt about with truth,” is a call for readiness which is being rooted in truth. To “gird” or fasten on the belt of “truth” is to be diligent in our preparation, determined in our pursuits, but also dedicated to truthfulness in our practice.
