“God’s Principles for Success in the Unknown Ahead—Dealing with Mistakes”

February 14, 2021 / Joshua 9-10:

Make A QUIET COMMITMENT:

  • QUIET your mind and soul before the LORD — “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10)
  • COMMIT to obedience: Commit to doing whatever God will say to you in this message — “to obey is better than sacrifice” (1 Samuel 15:22)

We are considering the new year seeking to enjoy God’s success in the unknown ahead by applying the principles found in the book of Joshua.

2 Timothy 2:21 If a man therefore purge [cleanse] himself from these [“vessels for dishonor” i.e. corrupting influences (v. 20)], he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified [set apart], and meet [useful] for the Master’s use, and prepared unto every good work.

Our purpose is to be “vessels” that are “fit for the Master’s use.” (Our 2021 theme video message: https://youtu.be/I9USPoROuWk)

QUESTION: How will we be successful? How will we be able to faithfully follow after Him and be a useful vessel that is fit for His use?

In order to accomplish this purpose, we are to seek to be diligent in our purity, keeping from corrupting influences, and also intentionally pursue Christlike qualities with others who practice Christlike influence.

Lesson #7: Dealing with Sin: we are to diligently seek to live a life a repentance from sin. The one who confesses and forsake his sin enjoys God’s victorious mercy.

Dealing with Mistakes of the Past (Joshua 9-10)

QUESTION: What effect do past mistakes have on your life? How do you respond the mistakes of your past? Are they a point of motivation to learn and grow or a weight of defeat and discouragement?

I.  The Mistaken —Joshua’s Faith (Joshua 9:1-18)

Complacency in the Christian life is the sure way of being deceived and defeated.

A.  It was the result of self- (Joshua 9:1-13)

B.  It was the result of self- (Joshua 9:14-18)

We follow victory with defeat with we rely upon our sight instead of walking by faith.

Joshua 9:14 And the men took of their victuals [provisions], and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.

WARNING: The danger of discouragement and defeat: Mistakes are often a point of discouragement that can become a Jericho of thought. We can beat ourselves up over the fact that we knew better yet failed again!

II.  The Mighty —Joshua’s Faith In (Joshua 9:19-10:43)

inactive faith yields mistaken verdicts while our faith in action puts God to work which brings about mighty victories.

Philippians 3:13-14 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

A.  Joshua’s of Faith—His Confidence in God’s (Joshua 9:19-10:11)

1.  Joshua his promise (Joshua 9:19-27)

2.  Joshua God’s promise (Joshua 10:1-9)

Psalm 15:4 In whose eyes a vile person is contemned [despised]; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.

B.  Joshua’s of Faith—His Confidence in God’s (Joshua 10:12-13)

Jeremiah 32:17 Ah Lord GOD! behold, Thou hast made the heaven and the earth by Thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for Thee:

C.  Joshua’s of Faith—His Confidence in God’s (Joshua 10:14-43)

Summary: Mistakes of the past can haunt us as they seek to paralyze us. Instead of living in paralyzed regret of the past, recover by listening to God, trusting Him to be true to His Word. We must be diligent to humbly step forward in obedient faith and learn from those mistakes. Live with a healthy fear of your own weakness and sinfulness and realize how much you need to depend upon the Lord with every step—every decision, no matter how big or small.

POINT OF ACTION: God’s promise for success in the unknown ahead are enjoyed when we deal with our mistakes of the past. Instead of practicing inactive faith we must step forward with active faith putting confidence in God’s Word, His will, and His way of victory for us.
