Love is Understanding

February 20, 2022

We all can have a tendency to:

  • Ignore
  • Isolate
  • Persecute

Main Point #1: But love does something different.

  • Love takes the time to listen in order to understand.
  • What if we took bold steps to truly listen and understand those who do not look like us, think like us or act like us?
  • What if we truly wanted to listen others more than we wanted to change others?
  • What if we could demolish the negative and destructive narratives by listening and respecting one another?
  • Politics, racial divides and Covid confusion have caused great separation. Though the atmosphere is turbulent, it is also ready for many to hear and experience the love of Jesus, but it will take more than us just telling them. It will take us all to lovingly listen to understand.

John 16:7-14 ESV “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. 12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

Main Point #2: I do not have the power to change anyone. But as a believer, I do have the power to love everyone.

  • It is the role of the Holy Spirit to bring about change as a result of truth.

Romans 10: 14-15 ESV How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

Three ways we can lead others to Jesus today:

  1. Love Listens
  2. Love Learns
  3. Love Loves
