BEST SUMMER EVER | “CALLED TO LIVE A DIFFERENT WAY”

– P. Matt Dilley

Romans 12:10 (NIV) …Honor one another above yourselves. Mark 6:1-4 (NLT) Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown. The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. They asked, “Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?” Then they scoffed, “He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us.” They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him. Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.”

Without Honor:

Atimos: to dishonor; to treat as common or ordinary.

Honor:

Time: to value, respect, or highly esteem; to treat as precious, weighty or valuable.

Honor: to value, to see its worth, to add weight.

Dishonor: to take lightly.

Honor elevates.

Dishonor decimates.

Honoring begins with God’s claim on them.

Romans 8:30 (NIV) And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified. 1 Peter 2:13-17 (NIV) Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king. When we ascribe honor to someone, they often become more honorable.

Honoring benefits me more. Mark 6:4-5 (NIV) Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. Ephesians 6:2-3 (NIV) “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—“that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”The more I value it, the more I get value from it.

Romans 12:10 (ESV) …Outdo one another in showing honor.
