Discussion Questions

John 10:7-10

Head — Understanding and Knowing

  • What is the purpose of a gate?
  • What were some of the false gates or ways to God that the Pharisees were promoting in Jesus’ day?
  • What are some modern “false gates” people believe will give them peace, security, or salvation?
  • In John 10:7–10, what does Jesus mean when He says, “I am the gate”? How is Jesus different from the “thieves and robbers” He describes?

Heart — Believing and Feeling

  • When you hear Jesus say, “I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved,” what feelings does that stir in you? Does it bring peace? Hope? Do you find it hard to believe?
  • Have you ever felt like you had to “earn” your way into God’s presence? What happens when we try to go through “other gates” instead of Jesus?
  • How does it change your understanding of God when you realize that Jesus, through His life, death and resurrection, opens the gate for you — and makes you righteous?
  • What does it mean for you personally that Jesus offers not just life, but full life? Does that speak to any particular longing or struggle you have right now?

Hands — Doing and Living

  • What are some “false gates” you are tempted to walk through in your daily life? What would it look like this week to walk away from those and turn back to Jesus, the true Gate?
  • What would it look like for you to live in the freedom Jesus promises — to “go in and out and find pasture”? How could that freedom shape your week ahead?
