MOTHER’S DAY SERMON 2024

May 12, 2024   /   First Baptist Church Charleston

Exodus 20:12

“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.”

Preparing the message this week, I thought, what can I say about mothers that has not already been said many times before?
The answer is, I doubt seriously there is anything I can say that would be new to you or would be something you have not heard before.

There will be many messages delivered this morning about the virtuous and godly mother of Proverbs Chapter 31: ”Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her” (Proverbs 31:10, 28).

No doubt the story of Jochebed will be repeated from many pulpits today. Jochebed was the mother of Moses. What a wonderful story of a mother’s love and sacrifice for her son.

Many pastors will recall the story of Hannah, the mother of Samuel, and how she dedicated him to the Lord, and how God honored her request by using him in the ministry.

Certainly, there is much we can say about mothers, many stories we can tell; and what I have to say will probably be something you’ve heard before. But, let me be quick to add, the story of ”Mother” never gets old.

THIS COULD HAVE BEEN MY MOTHER’S POEM ABOUT ME:

I’d like to send him to the store! He doesn’t hear my voice at all.

A window’s stuck! I need some help! Stone-deaf, he goes on playing ball.

Why now this panting rush toward home? This hug that numbs my shoulder blade?

It is simply that, though blocks away, he smelled the chocolate chip cookies I just made.

Allow me to give you FOUR brief and simple thoughts…

Psalm 127: 1-4

TWO TEMPLES by Hattie Vose Hall

A BUILDER builded a temple,

He wrought it with grace and skill;

Pillars and groins and arches,

all fashioned to work his will.

Men said as they saw its beauty,

“It shall never know decay;

Great is thy skill, O Builder!

Thy fame shall endure for aye.”

A MOTHER builded a temple,

With loving and infinite care;

Planning each arch with patience,

Laying each stone with prayer.

None praised her unceasing efforts,

None knew of her wondrous plan,

For the temple the Mother builded

Was unseen by the eyes of man.

Gone is the BUILDER’S temple.

Crumbled into the dust;

Low lies each stately pillar,

Food for consuming rust.

But the temple the MOTHER builded

Will last while the ages roll,

For that beautiful unseen temple

Was a child’s immortal soul.

Psalm 127: 1-4

Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late,
To eat the bread of sorrows; for so He gives His beloved sleep.

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
