Calm in the Storm: “Quiet Enough to Hear”

In the busyness of everyday life it can be

In I Kings 17, Elijah the prophet suddenly appeared to King Ahab

“As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.” 1 Kings 17:1 (NIV)

This confrontation between Elijah and Ahab leads to a great between God and Baal

How long will you waver between two opinions? “If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God follow him.” I Kings 18:21 (NIV)

‘then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil and also licked up the water in the trench” I Kings 18:38 (NIV)

Elijah should have been able to bask in that great of God’s power for a long time

“Elijah was afraid and ran for his life… He came to a broom bush, sad down under it and prayed that he might die.” 1 Kings 19:3 (NIV)

If you’ve ever been at your wit’s end, then you are not

“Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” 1 Kings 19:11

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. I Kings 19:11-12

God did not appear this time in power, but in

In this noisy world, we need to find ways to be and be quiet. Who can help us?

“Be still, and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10 (NIV)

“All of humanity’s problems stem from man’s inability to sit in a room alone.” B. Pascal

“But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Luke 5:16

We can get away from the noise, we can learn to be quiet and hear God’s

For Elijah, Jesus, and you and me, hearing God’s voice is about creating for Him to speak
