Hiding in the shadows

Today we begin a brand new series called SHADOWS. Shadows is a metaphor for dark, shady places where light is divided or inhibited or shut out completely.

Matthew 4:16 The people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.

Today we are going to get into the story of John the Baptist.

Please open your Bibles to Luke 3:3-14  (NLT)

Question: How can I come out of the shadows?

  1. Be open to the prophetic voice of God.
    1. Sometimes God uses the least likely people to speak into our lives.
    2. 2 Timothy 4:3 For a time will come when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. They will reject the truth and chase after myths.
    3. Are you open to the voice of God in our life?
  1. Be honest with yourself about the shadowy areas of your life.
    1. Vs. 8b, Don’t just say to each other, we’re safe, for we are descendants of Abraham. That means nothing…
  1. Move towards God and repent.
    1. Luke 3:10-13 (NLT)
      1. The crowds asked, “What should we do?” John replied, “if you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.” Even the corrupt  tax collectors came to be  baptized and asked, “teacher, what should we do?” He replied, “collect no more taxes than the government requires.
    2. John calls out dishonesty.
    3. Luke 3:14 “What should we do?” asked some soldiers. John replied, Don’t extort money or make false accusations. And be content with your pay.

Conclusion

Do you find yourself in the shadows today? If so, are you ready to come out of the shadows and into God’s glorious light?
