Baptism

 

Go public. We are in a series of messages about going public with our faith in Jesus Christ.

 

Romans 1:16 (NLT) For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile.

 

Go public that we follow Jesus, and we are not ashamed.

 

One of the most profound ways we can go public with our faith is through baptism. Today were going to talk about baptism.

 

This message is in 3 parts…

• A biblical challenge – for us all.
• Biblical teaching and history of baptism – for those who don’t get it, for those who need to defend / teach what we believe.
• Another challenge to obedience.

 

Acts 19:1 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions until he reached Ephesus, on the coast, where he found several believers. 2 “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” he asked them.

 

Acts 19:2“No,” they replied, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

3 “Then what baptism did you experience?” he asked.

And they replied, “The baptism of John.”

4 Paul said, “John’s baptism called for repentance from sin. But John himself told the people to believe in the one who would come later, meaning Jesus.”

 

Acts 19:5 As soon as they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 Then when Paul laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in other tongues and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all.

 

As soon as these men heard this message of Jesus what did they do? They weren’t satisfied with their baptism by John, they wanted to be baptized in the name of Jesus, they wanted to go all the way, they wanted everything that God was offering.

 

What baptism have you experienced?

 

And like Paul I’m going to say this; you may need to be baptized, or you may need to be baptized again because your first baptism wasn’t adequate. But now you know you want to follow Jesus, now you know that you want to be filled with the Holy Spirit, now you know that Jesus is everything and so I am declaring to you that you cannot skip this step of baptism to getting to the place that you want to be with Jesus Christ. This is your next step possibly.

 

Some of the history of baptism.

 

In the New Testament we’re introduced to baptism with John the Baptist in Luke 3. He is baptizing people in a public act indicating that they want to leave their sinful life. And then who comes walking up one day to be baptized? It’s Jesus himself. Jesus thinks baptism is important.

 

1 John 5:6 And Jesus Christ was revealed as God’s Son by his baptism in water and by shedding his blood on the cross…

 

This baptism of Jesus was like his coming out party!

 

BAPTISM IS A FIRST PRACTICAL STEP FOR THE JESUS FOLLOWER

 

Matthew 28:18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you.

 

The disciples began to tell everyone about Jesus and right away about 3000 people began to believe and here is what Peter told those new believers to do; Acts 2:38 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

           

Acts 22:15 For you are to be his witness, telling everyone what you have seen and heard. What are you waiting for? Get up and be baptized. Have your sins washed away by calling on the name of the Lord.’

 

Acts 10:37… We see it again with a man named Cornelius.

Acts 16:15… We see it again with a lady named Lydia.

Acts 16:33… We see it again when Paul is thrown into jail and the man who was guarding him is radically saved and is baptized, he and his whole family.

 

The point is that when people gave their life to Jesus it wasn’t just a private matter it was always followed up with baptism.

 

BAPTISM IS A GOD ORDAINED BLESSING

 

Paul would write about baptism in sort of a mysterious way to the Roman church. Listen to this…

 

Romans 6:1 Well then, should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace? 2 Of course not! Since we have died to sin, how can we continue to live in it? 3 Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death? 4 For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism.

 

Baptism is joining with Jesus in his death.

 

And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

5 Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised to life as he was.

 

If going down into the water was like dying with Jesus, coming up out of the water is like being resurrected from the dead to a new life.

 

We can’t be sheepish about this anymore…

 

So, remove your shoes, bow your head, and bend your knees: this is a holy event. Baptism is not to be taken lightly. The event is a willing plunge of the body and soul into the promise and power of Christ. The ritual of washing signifies our admission that apart from Christ we are dirty, but in Christ we are pure.

 

The ritual of burial signifies that we are willing to die to sin and self and that we can be made alive again because of him. (Luther referred to baptism as death by drowning.) Baptism effectively seals our salvation, uniting us to him and his body. Christ’s death becomes my death. Christ’s resurrection becomes my resurrection. There is no indication of an unbaptized believer in the New Testament church.

Romanos 1:16 (NTV) Porque no me avergüenzo de esta Buena Nueva acerca de Cristo. Es el poder de Dios obrando, salvando a todos los que creen, al judío primero y también al gentil.

 

Hacer público que seguimos a Jesús, y que no nos avergonzamos.

 

Una de las formas más profundas en que podemos hacer pública nuestra fe es a través del bautismo. Hoy vamos a hablar del bautismo.

 

Este mensaje está dividido en 3 partes…

• Un desafío bíblico para todos nosotros.
• Enseñanza bíblica e historia del bautismo – para aquellos que no lo entienden, para aquellos que necesitan defender / enseñar lo que creemos.
• Otro desafío a la obediencia.

 

Hechos 19:1 Mientras Apolos estaba en Corinto, Pablo viajó por las regiones interiores hasta llegar a Éfeso, en la costa, donde encontró a varios creyentes. 2 —¿Recibieron el Espíritu Santo cuando creyeron? —les preguntó—.

 

Hechos 19:2 Ellos respondieron: “No, ni siquiera hemos oído que haya Espíritu Santo”.

3 —Entonces, ¿qué bautismo experimentaste? —preguntó.

Y ellos respondieron: “El bautismo de Juan”.

4 Pablo dijo: «El bautismo de Juan exigía arrepentimiento del pecado. Pero Juan mismo le dijo a la gente que creyera en el que vendría después, es decir, en Jesús”.

 

Hechos 19:5 Al oír esto, fueron bautizados en el nombre del Señor Jesús. 6 Cuando Pablo les impuso las manos, el Espíritu Santo vino sobre ellos, y ellos hablaron en otras lenguas y profetizaron. 7 Había unos doce hombres en total.

 

Tan pronto como estos hombres escucharon este mensaje de Jesús, ¿qué hicieron? No estaban satisfechos con su bautismo por Juan, querían ser bautizados en el nombre de Jesús, querían llegar hasta el final, querían todo lo que Dios estaba ofreciendo.

 

¿Qué bautismo has experimentado?

 

Y al igual que Pablo, voy a decir esto; Es posible que necesite ser bautizado, o puede que necesite ser bautizado de nuevo porque su primer bautismo no fue adecuado. Pero ahora sabes que quieres seguir a Jesús, ahora sabes que quieres ser lleno del Espíritu Santo, ahora sabes que Jesús lo es todo y por eso te estoy declarando que no puedes saltarte este paso del bautismo para llegar al lugar en el que quieres estar con Jesucristo. Este es tu próximo paso posiblemente.

 

Algo de la historia del bautismo.

 

En el Nuevo Testamento se nos presenta el bautismo con Juan el Bautista en Lucas 3. Está bautizando a las personas en un acto público indicando que quieren dejar su vida pecaminosa. Y entonces, ¿quién viene caminando un día para ser bautizado? Es Jesús mismo. Jesús piensa que el bautismo es importante.

 

1 Juan 5:6 Y Jesucristo se manifestó como Hijo de Dios por su bautismo en agua y por derramamiento de su sangre en la cruz…

 

¡Este bautismo de Jesús fue como su fiesta de salida del armario!

 

EL BAUTISMO ES UN PRIMER PASO PRÁCTICO PARA EL SEGUIDOR DE JESÚS

 

Mateo 28:18 Jesús se acercó y dijo a sus discípulos: “Se me ha dado toda potestad en el cielo y en la tierra. 19 Id, pues, y haced discípulos a todas las naciones, bautizándolas en el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. 20 Enseñen a estos nuevos discípulos a obedecer todos los mandamientos que les he dado.

 

Los discípulos comenzaron a contarles a todos acerca de Jesús y de inmediato alrededor de 3000 personas comenzaron a creer y esto es lo que Pedro les dijo a esos nuevos creyentes que hicieran; Hechos 2:38 Pedro respondió: “Que cada uno de vosotros se arrepienta de sus pecados, y se convierta a Dios, y sea bautizado en el nombre de Jesucristo para perdón de sus pecados. Entonces recibirás el don del Espíritu Santo.

 

Hechos 22:15 Porque tú serás su testigo, contando a todos lo que has visto y oído. ¿A qué esperas? Levántate y bautízate. Haz que tus pecados sean lavados invocando el nombre del Señor’.

 

Hechos 10:37… Lo vemos de nuevo con un hombre llamado Cornelio.

Hechos 16:15… Lo vemos de nuevo con una señora llamada Lydia.

Hechos 16:33… Lo vemos de nuevo cuando Pablo es arrojado a la cárcel y el hombre que lo custodiaba se salva radicalmente y se bautiza, él y toda su familia.

 

El punto es que cuando las personas entregaban su vida a Jesús, no era solo un asunto privado, siempre era seguido por el bautismo.

 

EL BAUTISMO ES UNA BENDICIÓN ORDENADA POR DIOS

 

Pablo escribiría acerca del bautismo de una manera misteriosa a la iglesia romana. Escuchen esto…

 

Romanos 6:1 Pues bien, ¿debemos seguir pecando para que Dios nos muestre más y más de su maravillosa gracia? 2 ¡Por supuesto que no! Puesto que hemos muerto al pecado, ¿cómo podemos seguir viviendo en él? 3 ¿O se han olvidado de que cuando fuimos unidos a Cristo Jesús en el bautismo, nos unimos a él en su muerte? 4 Porque morimos y fuimos sepultados juntamente con Cristo por el bautismo.

 

El bautismo es unirse a Jesús en su muerte.

 

Y así como Cristo resucitó de entre los muertos por el glorioso poder del Padre, ahora también nosotros podemos vivir una vida nueva.

5 Puesto que nos hemos unido a él en su muerte, también resucitaremos como él era.

 

Si bajar al agua fue como morir con Jesús, salir del agua es como resucitar de entre los muertos a una nueva vida.

 

Ya no podemos ser tímidos al respecto…

 

Por lo tanto, quítate los zapatos, inclina la cabeza y dobla las rodillas: este es un evento sagrado. El bautismo no debe tomarse a la ligera. El evento es una inmersión voluntaria del cuerpo y el alma en la promesa y el poder de Cristo. El ritual del lavado significa que admitimos que separados de Cristo somos sucios, pero en Cristo somos puros.

 

El ritual del entierro significa que estamos dispuestos a morir al pecado y a nosotros mismos y que podemos ser resucitados de nuevo gracias a él. (Lutero se refirió al bautismo como muerte por ahogamiento). El bautismo sella efectivamente nuestra salvación, uniéndonos a él y a su cuerpo. La muerte de Cristo se convierte en mi muerte. La resurrección de Cristo se convierte en mi resurrección. No hay ninguna indicación de un creyente no bautizado en la iglesia del Nuevo Testamento.

 

Veamos lo que DIOS puede hacer!
