The Word of Suffering, John 19:28
Jesus said “I thirst” on the cross so that in him we can thrive.
- “I thirst” = Jesus was fully
- Jesus was not a man
- Jesus was not a God
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. John 1:14
- “I thirst” = Jesus intensely
- He the first drink (wine mixed with myrrh, Mark 15:23) which would have numbed the pain
- He the second drink (sour wine, Mark 15:36) which extended his conscious suffering even longer
- “I thirst” = Jesus fulfilled
“knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), ‘I thirst’” John 19:28
- “I thirst” = Jesus to the Father’s will
- God’s will is not a box to check off but a life to be with the Father.
“walk by the Spirit…led by the Spirit…live by the Spirit.” Galatians 5:16-26
- “I thirst” = Jesus with our suffering
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15
- “I thirst” = Jesus the mystery of pain
- Everyone everywhere has suffered from the of the material world to satisfy our needs.
- Everyone everywhere has suffered from the of our most treasured, intimate relationships to satisfy our souls.
…looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2
- “I thirst” = Jesus echoes the cry of humanity
- By faith we can escape the hell
- By faith we can escape the hell
