Deuteronomy 6:4-5

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Leviticus 19:18

You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.

1 Corinthians 13:5-6; 13

love does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth … And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

1. Definition of Love:

1 Corinthians 8:1 This “knowledge” puffs up, but love builds up.

1 Corinthians 13:5 love does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,

1 John 4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

John 15:13 “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends

2. Manner How to

Fundamental Obstacle: Primal Love for Self

Ephesians 5:25,28-29 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her… In the same way husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one has ever hated his own body but he feeds it and takes care of it, just as Christ also does the church.

Not Abandon Love for Self; Love for Self Satisfied in Christ

Matthew 7:9-12 Is there anyone among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you then, although you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! In everything, treat others as you would want them to treat you, for this fulfills the law and the prophets

3. of Love To Us

We Are Perfect Before God

James 1:4 And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

James 2:8 If you, however, perfect the kingly Law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” then are doing well.

2 Corinthians 5:14-15 For the love of Christ controls us…so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.

Love Is Therefore the Greatest

Romans 13:9 For the commandments, “Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not covet,“ are summed up in this, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Matthew 22:38 This is the first and greatest commandment ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

1 Corinthians 13:13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love

Concluding Challenge

Love is the greatest because love perfects us – that is, everything that God intends for us to be is realized when we meet the needs of others because Jesus’s death and resurrection satisfied our every need.

The greatest obstacle to love is selfishness – the primal love for self.

The call to love is not to abandon love for self, but rather to have Jesus satisfy our love for self, which then frees to love.

Therefore be perfect by loving as your Heavenly Father is perfect.
