The Art of The Calling
“And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified;
those he justified, he also glorified. ~ Romans 8:30
“God speaks a decisive word that puts us on the way, the road. The path of life. The Hebrew word for Bible is Miqra, a noun formed from the verb “to call” qara. The Bible is not a book to carry around and read for information on God, but a voice to listen to. I like that. The word of God that we name Bible, book, is not at the root word to be read and looked at and discussed. It is a word to be listened to and obeyed, a word that gets us going. Fundamentally, it is a call. God calls us.” ~ Eugene Peterson, Practice Resurrection.
Hodge and others believe the Epistles of the New Testament, is applied to those who have only the outward invitation of the Gospel.
The calling always means internally, effectually, saving called.
In Greek call or calling ‘Kaleo’ and ‘Klesis’. The term is connected to the term designating God’s summons to specific task or role and his special relationship to his people.
Moses was called out in Exodus 3:4; 10 and Samuel to be God’s servant – 1 Samuel 3:1-14.
“You can’t fulfill your calling in your comfort zone!” – Steven Furtick
“God does not choose people because of their ability, but because of their availability.” – Brother Andrew
At the Holocaust Museum upon entry words in the wall read (Permanent Exhibit entitled) “Bearing Witness”
• Voices and Voices II are lessons of life calling for freedom and no hate from the Jews.
We need to discover who we are outside of what we do. Each of us has two calling:
• The First is Faith Calling
• The Second Vocational Calling
A. Our faith calling is who we are. It doesn’t change. It’s your purpose. A faith calling is a ‘who’.
B. Our vocational calling is our career. It may change over time. It is not who you are. It’s what you ‘do’. Our vocation can and will continue to change.
C. There’s not a hard line between secular vocation and spiritual calling either.
You DON’T need a ministry TITLE to live out a spiritual calling.
Bishop Joseph Walker III says being a Bishop ‘is in the work’. Never in the title.
In 1 Corinthians 1:26 “And Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.”
Paul refers to God calling anyone and everyone who will respond. The teacher, the lawyer, the policeman or policewoman, the doctor or nurse, the chef, the politician, fraternities, sororities, and activists.
“A true Christian lives and labors on earth not for himself but for his neighbor. Therefore the whole spirit of his life him impels him to do even that which he needs not do, but which is profitable and necessary for his neighbor.” ― Martin Luther
When we understand a calling from God we will realize what really is important.
When we understand a calling from God we will be released from the lie of serving self.
• When God calls a person he has designed them for the call.
• When God calls a person he look for ordinary people.
• When God calls a person His purpose becomes clearer.
“Don’t let someone keep putting out the flame God keeps re-lighting, we all have a purpose. As a wing to a bird. As wind that goes the destiny over the sea.” – Anthony Liccione
