LESSON NOTES

Discussion on principles and practice of the Lord’s Supper or Communion.

A. The Lord’s Supper means the Words of Institution, it recounts the instructions of Jesus at the Last Supper.

Reflection and remembrance of the Exodus of Israel and the command of God the bondage in Egypt.

B. In Communion we become participants in the Blood of Christ and the Body of Christ. Making you a participant in Christ’s saving death.

Our worship response to communion is confession and reconciliation.

Remember communion establishes our vertical connection with Christ and our horizontal connection with Christ’s body and the church.

17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, for your meetings do more harm than good. 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions among you, and to some extent I believe it. 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval. 20 So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, 21 for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. 22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God by humiliating those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? Certainly not in this matter!

23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.” ~ 1 Corinthians 11:17-29

Eucharist in Greek Eucharistein – verb meaning to thank.

Paul discusses the Lord Supper, the earliest account of this element a sacredness for over 2,000 years ago and is universally observed by the church worldwide.

1. Understand it is frequent (vss.17,20) “meetings” “come together”

2. Understand it is important (v24) “the consequences of not doing it correctly and taking it very seriously. Examine everything—motives, test and examine your heart, come to this meal in holy reverence for Christ. (V28)

3. Understand it is a proclamation (v28) “proclaim the gospel,” “proclaim the good news,” whenever until his death.

4. Understand it involves both the remembering and reflection on Jesus (v24-25) but, also recognizing the Lord’s body and Holy expectation of an encounter with him. (V29)

5. Understand the participation in Christ’s body and the power of his blood. Here is our Greek word koinonia which means “sharing” or “fellowship.” Shared benefits for all believers.
“Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ?” ~ 1 Corinthians 10:16

6. Understand it is a form of thanksgiving and celebration. 1 Corinthians 10:17 – “we drink of the cup in thanksgiving”.

7. Understand it is an expression of total unity. 1 Corinthians 10:17 “Consider one loaf; we who are many. Consider one body” one of the greatest tragedies of the church and its history as we express unity and its significance; but in reality, it was division and deception at the table and has caused a spirit of division in the church today.

8. Understand it is in anticipation of the Lord’s return. We preach, proclaim and prophesy “the Lord’s death” until he returns.

Definitions

Transubstantiation – in Christianity, the change by which the substance of the bread and wine in the Eucharist becomes Christ’s real presence, his body and his blood.

Roman Catholicism and some Christian churches follow this doctrine. Priest commonly consecrate alone.

Consubstantiation is the description of the nature of the Christian Eucharist. It holds to the sacrament of the fundamental substance of the body and blood of Christ are present alongside the substance of the bread and wine.

Martin Luther teaches that the blood and the body of Christ are present in, with and under the forms of the bread and wine.
