Lesson 1 – THE GOD OF SECOND CHANCES

February 6, 2021

GOD ENCOUNTERS
The definition of an encounter is a meeting, often an unexpected one.
Lesson 1 – THE GOD OF SECOND CHANCES
“The story of Jesus and his miracles is still being written on our hearts. He’s writing your episode at this very moment. Whatever you’re facing, whatever test you’re in, just say, “Lord, come and write your story in my life today.” – Buddy Owens

The Calling of Matthew

“As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him. While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” ~ Matthew 9:9-13

God is a God of second chances. He has a plan and a purpose for your life.

1. as I am.

“As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.” ~ Matthew 9:9

o Just as Jesus saw Matthew as he truly was, Jesus sees you .

2. as I am.

“While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” ~ Matthew 9:10-11

3. as I am.

“On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” ~ Matthew 9:12-13

“Your love is like the morning mist, like the early dew that disappears.”….“For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.” ~ Hosea 6:4b, 6

o Jesus didn’t call Matthew to a religion, He called him to a .

4. as I am.

A. The call of Matthew is a picture of the of God. That same grace is available to you today.

“God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.” ~ Ephesians 2:8-9 (NLT)

B. Everyone else looked at Matthew and saw his past. But Jesus looked at Matthew and .

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” ~ John 3:16 (NKJV)

C. The only person on Earth who can allow your sin to come between you and God .

“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” ~ 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)

Matthew shows us that there is no man or woman who is beyond God’s forgiveness. And there is no forgiven man or woman who cannot be used for God’s glory.

Additional reflection: (1) What’s a ‘God Encounter’ experience that you can share in your life?
-OR- (2) Can you recall a Second Chance Encounter with God?
