1 Samuel 18:1-3 “After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. 2 From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return home to his family. 3 And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself.”
Jonathan recognizes the anointing of God on David’s life.
Jonathan sees in David what he had once hoped for in himself.
1 Samuel 18:4 “Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.”
Jonathan took the symbols of his royal position as future king and gave them to David.
Not only was Jonathan willing to lose the throne; he became the biggest advocate for the man who would take it.
Am I able to celebrate what God is doing around me even when I’m not the one being championed?
1 Samuel 18:7b “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.”
David’s success increased, Saul’s jealousy increased as well.
1 Samuel 20:16 So Jonathan made a solemn pact with David, saying, “May the Lord destroy all your enemies!”
17 And Jonathan made David reaffirm his vow of friendship again, for Jonathan loved David as he loved himself. (NLT)

Jonathan was optimistic about his king-to-be. Our hope is solid in the King of all kings.
