All Things New Series
Week 2: In With The New
Matthew 9:14-17 NIV
14 Then John’s disciples came and asked him, “How is it that we and the Pharisees fast often, but your disciples do not fast?”
15 Jesus answered, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.
16 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. 17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
Neophobia- the fear of new things.
Cenophobia- the fear of new ideas
If we are not careful, we can allow neophobia the fear of new things and cenophobia the fear of new ideas to run rampant in our spiritual life.
In order for God to do something new and fresh within you, He has to change your posture, your perspective and your place(if you missed week 1, it is available now on FB!)
Isaiah 43:18-19 NIV
18 “Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.
Mark 7:13 NIV
13 Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”
There are 2 things in this text that stood out to me in this text when Jesus talks about In With The New:
Matthew 9:16 NIV
16 “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse.
2nd Corinthians 5:17 AMPC
17 Therefore if any person is [ingrafted] in Christ (the Messiah) he is a new creation (a new creature altogether); the old [previous moral and spiritual condition] has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!
When you follow God’s direction, you have His protection!
Matthew 5:45 AMPC
45 [aj]To show that you are the children of your Father Who is in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the wicked and on the good, and makes the rain fall upon the upright and the wrongdoers [alike].
Isaiah 59:19 AMPC
19 So [as the result of the Messiah’s intervention] they shall [reverently] fear the name of the Lord from the west, and His glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord will lift up a standard against him and put him to flight [for He will come like a rushing stream which the breath of the Lord drives].
Matthew 9:17 NIV
17 Neither do people pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.”
God wants to preserve both you and the new influence He wants to give you!
1 John 4:4 NIV
4 You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.
