Water Baptism

What an exciting day! Baptism Sunday is today! It is wonderful to see people progress in their walk with Jesus Christ.

Today we are going to look at the Word of God to get understanding of why we take the step of faith of Water Baptism.

Hebrews 6:1-2 (NLT) 1 So let us stop going over the basic teachings about Christ again and again. Let us go on instead and become mature in our understanding. Surely we don’t need to start again with the fundamental importance of repenting from evil deeds and placing our faith in God. 2 You don’t need further instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.

Doctrines of Baptisms

1. Baptized into – Galatians 3:27; 1 Corinthians 12:13

2. Baptized in

3. Baptized in the power of the – Acts 1:8; Acts 2:1-4

Water Baptism

Part of the Gospel

Mark 16:15-16 (NLT)

[15] And then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone, everywhere. [16] Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. But anyone who refuses to believe will be condemned.

Matthew 28:18-19 (NLT)

[18] Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth. [19] Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Why Should You be Baptized?

1. – Follow Jesus Example

Matthew 3:15 (NKJV)

[15] But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.

2. – Outward Expression of an Inward Work –Act of Faith

Matthew 10:32-33 (NKJV)

[32] “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. [33] “But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.

Acts 8:36-39 (NLT)

[36] As they rode along, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “Look! There’s some water! Why can’t I be baptized?”* [38] He ordered the carriage to stop, and they went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.

[39] When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away. The eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing.

3. Identification with – Buried with Jesus in death & raised to new life

Romans 6:4-8 (NLT)

[4] For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.

[5] Since we have been united with him in his death, we will also be raised as he was. [6] Our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. [7] For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin. [8] And since we died with Christ, we know we will also share his new life.

4. Clear Conscience before

1 Peter 3:21 (AMP)

[21] And baptism, which is a figure [of their deliverance], does now also save you [from inward questionings and fears], not by the removing of outward body filth [bathing], but by [providing you with] the answer of a good and clear conscience (inward cleanness and peace) before God [because you are demonstrating what you believe to be yours] through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Water Baptism is not about cleansing the body but through faith it has the power to provide a clear conscience or inward cleanness and peace before God.

Water Baptism does not you.

Salvation comes from in the heart and with the mouth.

Romans 10:9-13 (NKJV)

9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. 13 For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”

Water Baptism Requires one thing – You must be

You don’t have to know everything about water baptism before you get water baptized. You didn’t know everything that salvation provides before you accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.

You need to know the simplicity of it – Identified with Christ, that it is scriptural, that I am expressing my faith in Christ’s death burial and resurrection…

Religion complicates, Jesus simplifies…
