Why Gifts?

What are the gifts? What are they for? How do you get them? Who gets them? What do you do with them?

Spiritual gifts are not a sign of Christian Character or Spiritual Maturity. The Corinthian believers exercised many miraculous gifts. Gifts were and are given for a marked purpose.

Why did Paul write this in his letter to Corinth? Problems in the Corinthian Church – division, immorality, stunted spiritual growth and confusion in the worship services.

1 Corinthians 14

  • An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
  • Love is the motivation for everything!
  • Prophecy is not the greatest Spiritual Gift but is greater than Tongues.

1. Gifts are to God.

The importance of this activity points to the giver of the gifts.

When a believer speaks in tongues whether in their prayer language or as a gift, they are speaking directly to God.

2. Gifts are to the Church.

There are various gifts given to many different people for the purpose of growth and maturity.

The Apostle Paul is not shortchanging tongues but regulating the gift.

3. Gifts are to the believer.

When a person is operating in the gifts of tongues especially, they are being edified by the Holy Spirit for the church.

A person’s prayer language is given to operate in the context of devotion and intercession which is the outflow of the Spirit’s baptism.
