Why Gifts?

What are the gifts? What are they for? How do you get them? Who gets them? What do you do with them?

Spiritual gifts are not a sign of Christian Character or Spiritual Maturity. The Corinthian believers exercised many miraculous gifts. Gifts were and are given for a marked purpose.

1. Spiritual gifts are given to help the .

Those believers (Corinthians) who possessed miraculous gifts looked down on the others who did not possess gifts and thought them less important.

In the human body, the weakness or pain of one member affects the other members. In the Church, if one believer suffers, we all suffer; if one member grows in strength, we all receive help.

2. Spiritual gifts are to help not a believer’s walk with God.

Ephesians 4:16 indicates that every part of the body makes some kind of contribution toward the growth of the church.

“He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.” Eph. 4

3. The Diversity of Spiritual gifts are given to the health of individuals and the corporate body.

There are different ways gifts are used and gifts are applied.

Jesus chooses spiritual leaders, gives them spiritual gifts and places them in the body as He chooses.

Everyone in the Church will benefit if the Gifts function properly. (Gift of Administration, Service, Helps, Leadership, Ministries, Offices, Etc.)

4. Some Spiritual gifts are given to what God has already spoken to the believer.

The Holy Spirit is the giver of all gifts. The function of the Spirit is to communicate God’s purpose and will for a believer.

There are several ways the Holy Spirit can speak to a believer.

a. Through the Word b. Through the believer themselves c. Through another believer (individually) d. Through a corporate message
