House of Hope

June 6, 2021

June 6, 2021 – KWCF – 48th Anniversary

Ephesians 1:15-23 – That’s why, when I heard of the solid trust you have in the Master Jesus and your outpouring of love to all the followers of Jesus, I couldn’t stop thanking God for you—every time I prayed, I’d think of you and give thanks. But I do more than thank. I ask—ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory—to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is he is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for his followers, oh, the utter extravagance of his work in us who trust him—endless energy, boundless strength!

All this energy issues from Christ: God raised him from death and set him on a throne in deep heaven, in charge of running the universe, everything from galaxies to governments, no name and no power exempt from his rule. And not just for the time being, but forever. He is in charge of it all, has the final word on everything. At the center of all this, Christ rules the church. The church, you see, is not peripheral to the world; the world is peripheral to the church. The church is Christ’s body, in which he speaks and acts, by which he fills everything with his presence. – The Message

The Church is essential, so churches are essential and we must see them as such.

· In this climate of fear and hopelessness the church has the only real answer

· We alone have the Good News of Jesus Christ that changes lives – and gives a message of Hope

· We have the only real message of Hope for our Community

REMEMBER – the past

· Reminiscing; Good old days? What is it the appeals to us? These really are the best days now, but…

· They were simple days, passionate days, exciting pioneering days, we did not have much, but a word from God, and that was enough to start; many destinies touch in God’s church

· Remember: To bring anew to the mind; to keep in mind carefully; not forget; to hold in mind with gratitude, regard, reverence; to call or keep to mind; memorial, memories

Remembering has the power…to bind or to loose.

· The pain of the past can hold us back – the failures, disappointments, unmet expectations – regrets

· The successes of the past can encourage us forward – God’s faithfulness

· There are always those who have gone before us in the faith, who have paid a price for us

· Each of us has a responsibility to build for those who will come behind us! – Not just make it about us.

CELEBRATE – the present

· What He has done before us and now what He is doing among us

o We are able to live with an expectation that God is for us

o We are able to have confidence in the faithfulness of God

o We are able to endure difficult situations with hope

o We are to be strengthened in faith as we glorify God

· New starts to new seasons

o A time for asking ourselves where we have grown and where we need to grow

CREATE – the future

· Philippians 3:12-14

o Personally and corporately we choose to go forward

o Leaving behind the successes and failures of the past and the celebrations of today

· It is time to make new memories; new starts, and endings, relationships, opportunities etc…

Matthew 21:12-16 – Context: Jesus had entered Jerusalem to great celebration and went straight to the temple

· A House of Purity and Prayer [God’s will and purpose not man’s]

· A House of Power and Praise [Healing – Miracles – Thanksgiving to God]

· He placed the focus clearly on the Father and His heart for people

· His House was to be a House of Hope!

External Hope: based on circumstances of life – situations that change for better or worse

Internal Hope: based on expectations of life – experiences, will power, positive or negative leanings

Eternal Hope: based upon what does not change – hope that originates with God Himself

Psalm 31: 24 “Be of good courage and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who, hope in the Lord.”

Psalm 42: “Why are you cast down, O my soul…Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him”

Psalm 71: 14 “But I will hope continually, and will praise You yet more and more.”

Psalm 119: 81 “My soul faints for Your salvation, But I hope in Your word.”

Psalm 119: 114 “You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word”

Psalm 119: 147 “I rise before the dawning of the morning, and cry for help; I hope in Your word.”

· “Forever, O lord, Your word is settled in heaven” (v89)

Proverbs 13: 12 “Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but when the desire comes, it is a tree of life.”

Jeremiah 17: 7 “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is in the Lord.”

Hope has a name!

1. Jesus is our Hope

· Because he reveals the true God

· John 14:1-9 – Show us the Father? I am the way, the truth, the life

· He is the only way to God – Jesus is our Hope because He shows the only way and leads us in it

o No one comes to the Father except through Me – v6

o There is no other way – not good works or religious activity; we cannot get to Him alone

o No other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved – Acts 4:12

o The only way is forgiveness for sin and reconciled back to relationship with God through the life – death and resurrection of Jesus

· He is the truth – Jesus is our Hope because He does not have truth, He is Truth

o He is a perfect Saviour not a flawed hero – there is no darkness in Him, no failure, or falsehood in Him; His word does not change, it is settled forever in heaven (Psalm 119:89)

o We can utterly depend upon Him; His Word and can be completely trusted

· He is the life – Jesus is our Hope because He is the only source of Eternal Life

o For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life – John 3:16

o He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him – Hebrews 5:9

o Eternal life is not just existing forever but knowing Him and be in relationship with Him, forever.

· If you have seen Me you have seen the Father – v9 – It is about a relationship

2. We are to Live with Hope

· Hope has a name – Jesus

· God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery, among the Gentiles, which is, Christ in you, the hope of Glory – Colossians 1:27

· We are a people who live with hope because we live with Jesus – Hold on to Hope

· Hebrews 6:11-12 – to the full assurance of hope – through faith and patience obtain the promises

· Hebrews 6:18-19 – lay hold of the hope set before us – this hope we have as an anchor of the soul both sure and steadfast and enters the Presence behind the veil.

· John 15 – ABIDE: continue, dwell, remain; to settle, to sink deeper; Hold on to Jesus – v4; Hold on to the Word – v7; Hold on to His love – v9;

3. We are to be a Voice of Hope

· We have to be established in hope to give hope

· People hope in many things: themselves, ability, skill, education, economy, job, promotion, money, friends, government – but all these can disappoint us

· Our hope is in the Lord, not just what we can see, feel, touch or hear

· 1 Peter 3:15 – But sanctify the Lord in your hearts, always ready to give a defence to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear.

· Our message of Hope to others

o God is love and has made a way to reconciled us to Himself through Jesus – If we Believe

o Forgiveness of sins – Freedom from the past – from the bondage of sin – and fear

o He will never forsake us – always with us

o He is all knowing – all powerful and ever present so we can trust Him

· The need is great today and we must speak up with a voice of faith and hope for others

Jesus is the Hope of the World therefore His Church is the Hope of the world

· We must live with Hope and speak out in Hope for others

Romans 15:13 – Now [not later] may the God of Hope, fill you with all joy and peace, in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
