WHERE IS GOD WHEN YOU HURT?

April 18, 2021

It is Christ who is to be exalted, not our feelings. We will know Him by obedience, not by emotions. Our love will be shown by obedience, not by how good we feel about God at a given moment. “And love means following the commands of God.” “Do you love Me?” Jesus asked Peter. “Feed My lambs.” He was not asking, “How do you feel about Me?” for love is not a feeling. He was asking for action. – Elisabeth Elliot

Joy. Sadness. Anger. Compassion. God has given each of us the capacity to feel deeply. And when we can better process our powerful emotions, we can start to understand how He will use them for His good.

One word describe current emotional state?

Numb—Angry—Afraid—Anxious—Irritated—Unsettled.

Jesus just finished preaching Sermon on Mount—Luke 7:11

11 Soon afterward Jesus went with his disciples to the village of Nain, and a large crowd followed him. 12 A funeral procession was coming out as he approached the village gate. The young man who had died was a widow’s only son, and a large crowd from the village was with her. 13 When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. “Don’t cry!” he said. 14 Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. “Young man,” he said, “I tell you, get up.” 15 Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother. 16 Great fear swept the crowd, and they praised God, saying, “A mighty prophet has risen among us,” and “God has visited his people today.”

“…the Lord saw her.” Luke 7:13

When the Lord saw her, his heart overflowed with compassion. (7:13)

Root Greek word translated compassionSplagna.

Love word, Pretty much what means—Refers your intestines—Guts.

Jesus sees grieving mom—Hurts with her and for her in his gut.

“…Don’t cry!” he said. 14 Then he walked over to the coffin and touched it, and the bearers stopped. (13b-14)

When Jesus touched boy’s body—Crossed a line!

Jesus was a line crosser—Rule breaker.

Every time religion drew a line—Jesus crossed the line.

Religious people care about rules, appearances.

We don’t draw lines to keep people out.

We cross lines to bring people in.

The Lord saw. He cared. He touched.

Not only gives her back her son—Gives her back her hope!

Some—Hope Back!

Jesus sees. He cares. Just one touch.

Jesus sees. He cared. He touched—Just one touch.

Hope back—Jesus sees you—Notices

His heart goes out to you! Cares more than you can imagine.
