The Gospel According to Romans

God keeps His promises in spite of

  1. God’s (Romans 11:1-6)

How did God encourage Elijah?

    • The Lord assured Elijah that the doesn’t determine Israel’s future.
    • The Lord gave Elijah . (1 Kings 19:15-17).
    • God would preserve a remnant (of 7,000 Jews) to forward. 

 

  1. God’s development of Israel’s . (Romans 11:7-14)

Deuteronomy 29:4-6

Psalm 69:20-24

A double benefit in this arrangement

    • (v. 12, 13) This allowed the Gentiles time to understand and then submit to God’s plan.
    • (v. 14) It made the Jews zealous to have what they were missing. 

Paul had dedicated his life to preaching to the Gentiles, but he longed for his Jewish brothers and sisters to know the grace of God through !

 

  1. Temporary hardening and of Israel (Romans 11:15-27)

Read Romans 11:1-27. What is the main theme or message of Romans 11? How does it relate to the broader context of the book of Romans?

How did Paul answer those who believed that God had rejected the Jews in Romans 11:1-6?

 

Tuesday

Read Romans 11:1-27. How did God answer Elijah’s call to destroy Israel in verses 2-4?

According to verse 5, what has God chosen by grace?

What characteristics separated the remnant of Israel from the rest of Israel?

 

Wednesday

Read Romans 11:1-27 in a paraphrase.  How did Paul describe the people in Israel who please God in Romans 11:5, 6?

What do you think causes people reared in Christian families and church activities to turn away from God?

 

Thursday

Read Romans 11:1-27. According to Romans 11:7-9, what had Israel done to try to obtain righteousness in God’s sight?

In what ways do you see a remnant at work today?

By what means other than grace do people try to please God?

 

Friday

Read Romans 11:1-27 in another language if you can. How do you think it’s possible to seek intently for God by doing good deeds, and yet miss Him?

How would you encourage a new believer to avoid the influences in their life that could harden their heart against God? (At least generally speaking, or specifically if you can.)

What can you do this week to encourage a Christian who feels outnumbered or overwhelmed?
