The Passover Door – Exodus 12:1-42
Sunday, March 20, 2022

Pastor Mike Bailey

Introduction

“When God closes one door, he opens another.” We’ve all heard this phrase. Maybe some of us have even said it ourselves, but this phrase has no foundation in the Bible. In fact, sometimes God closes a door because He does not want you going anywhere! Throughout scripture, God uses doors to highlight several important lessons. A door can keep something out, keep something in, protect, or even draw a boundary line. Doors play a role in some of the most significant situations we read about in the Bible. How did God use these doors and what can we learn from them? Discover how God used the doors of the Bible in this new teaching series.

1. God’s people amongst the world. (12:1)

15 Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. 16 For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. 17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever. 1 John 2:15-17

You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? James 4:4a

“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”  John 3:16

”I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark.” John 12:46

Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them. Ephesians 5:11

“In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” Matthew 5:16

2. God’s people had special . (12:2-20)

The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” Psalm 32:8

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. 2 Timothy 3:16

3. God’s instructions span the . (12:21-27)

Tell your children about it in the years to come, and let your children tell their children. Pass the story down from generation to generation. Joel 1:3

“And through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed—all because you have obeyed me.” Genesis 22:18

“You must not bow down to them or worship them, for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected—even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me.”  Deuteronomy 5:9

4. God’s people were . (12:28-30)

But in that coming day no weapon turned against you will succeed. You will silence every voice raised up to accuse you. These benefits are enjoyed by the servants of the Lord; their vindication will come from me. I, the Lord, have spoken! Isaiah 54:17

So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” Hebrews 13:6

5. God’s people were . (12:31-33)

Then they will come to their senses and escape from the devil’s trap. For they have been held captive by him to do whatever he wants. 2 Timothy 2:26

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32

6. The testament of the door and the .

It’s your sins that have cut you off from God. Isaiah 59:2a

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Romans 3:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

Closing: God will one day judge the world again, do you have the blood of Jesus protecting you?
