Does Prayer Work: A Prayer of Service

Matthew 6:9-13
Sunday, May 16, 2021

Pastor Mike Bailey

Introduction

Our struggles are real. Our pain does hurt. Our needs require real solutions. And like many people, we take our struggles to God in prayer. But is God listening? Does He hear our pleas and care about our needs? Are there conditions to whether or not He will hear our prayers and answer them? How do we know prayer works or that God listens? God has gifted us with a direct line of communication with Him through the Holy Spirit, but how do we know we are really connected to God and how do we know His response? This message series will answer real questions you have about prayer.

1. What us to pray?

a., when things are going well.

I will exalt You, my God, the King, And I will bless Your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless You, And I will praise Your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised; And His greatness is unsearchable. One generation will praise Your works to another, And will declare Your mighty acts. On the glorious splendor of Your majesty And on Your wonderful works, I will meditate. People will speak of the power of Your awesome acts, And I will tell of Your greatness. They will burst forth in speaking of Your abundant goodness, And will shout joyfully of Your righteousness. Psalm 145:1-7

b. , when things are going wrong.

Be gracious to me, Lord, for I am in distress; My eye is wasted away from grief, my soul and my body too. Psalm 31:9

c. We are called to pray without .

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Therefore, I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands, without anger and dispute. 1 Timothy 2:8

Notes:

2. What is the way to pray?

“And when you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they will be seen by people. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But as for you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door, and pray to your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. And when you are praying, do not use thoughtless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. Pray, then, in this way:” Matthew 6:5-13
