What’s in Your Treasure Box?

Luke 12:13-33

*We’ll notice today 4 aspects of and then wrap up with some resetting thoughts to help us move forward God’s way.

I. Materialism (Luke 12:13)

And one of the company said unto him, Master, speak to my brother, that he divide the inheritance with me.

-This fighting is just a of a much greater issue—that issue is the love of and focus upon the material in the face of a much more significant matter—the eternal nature of God and our own soul.

II. Materialism Cautioned (Luke 12:14-15)

-And he said unto him, Man, who made me a judge or a divider over you? And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

-Jesus was cautioning this guy to step back re-evaluate his sense of what’s important.

-To miss this point is to walk right into eternal destruction…when this life is over, none of it goes with you.

-Don’t let an eye fixed on this world’s gain you from what’s really, truly important! (Accept Christ today!)

III. Materialism Illustrated (Luke 12:16-21)

And he spake a parable unto them, saying, The ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided? So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

-His was that he would have much time to enjoy all his stuff…not realizing that he was living his last day on earth and would leave it all behind!

-Don’t be like rich fool who pursued that which didn’t have any eternal significance at all!

-Materialism can leave us in an eternally condemned position if we let it keep us away from Christ.

IV. Materialism (Luke 12:22-33)

*Worry over the “stuff” of life reveals a misplaced hope and must be REplaced.

7 Resetting Hope-Filled Truths (to replace materialistic thinking & direction):

1. Life is about than the physical. (Luke 12:22-23)

And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment.

2. God is our . (Luke 12:24, 27-28)

Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls?…Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith?

3. Worry accomplishes . (Luke 12:25-26)

And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest?

4. Restful trust is a privilege. (Luke 12:29-31)

And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. But rather seek ye the kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you.

5. God is to provide. (Luke 12:32)

Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

6. Material gain is a means, not an end. (Luke 12:33)

Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

7. establishes pursuit. (Luke 12:34)

-For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

*Where is YOUR treasure…do you value Christ and all He has brought to you or are you by the slavery of earthly materialism?

*Don’t fall prey to the deception of thinking earthly gain is ultimate gain…Eternal life through Jesus Christ is truly the ultimate gain.
