Shaping Bible Life in Your Home
-As we engage our children with biblical instruction, we must have the big picture in mind—it’s not a and done occurrence!
5 goals in shaping a biblical big picture approach to parenting:
Bible history is (Deuteronomy 6:20-25)
-For the Israelites in Moses’ day, part of following God was intentionally God’s provision for them in days past.
-Their history was a constant reminder of God’s character—faithfulness.
-Your children cannot understand why they are in this world, how sin has affected them, and how redemption restores what sin has destroyed, apart from their spiritual history from the Bible!
-Your instruction never finds ultimate purpose until you can give it in the of the story of Scripture that tells them who they are and about the God Who made them and offers them redemption.
Teach foundational habits (Proverbs 22:6)
-We need to teach our children habits of life that reflect God’s truth.
–Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Prov. 22:6)
–instruction that interprets life experiences and challenges heart attitudes with God’s Words prepares the soil of the heart for the Holy Spirit’s plowing.
-A spiritually healthy adulthood is rooted in early biblical training. (2 Timothy 1:5; 3:14-15)
Bible to normal life (1 Samuel 17)
-When it comes to issues of authority, obedience, conflict resolution, and God-given roles in relationships, it is Scripture that needs to be the reference point.
-Everyday life affords tons of opportunities to Scripture to life—from broken book bags to broken friendships and poor test grades.
-Unfortunately, these Bible-based teaching opportunities evaporate without notice when we hurry through our days thinking that devotional time with our children is enough.
-Our responses to the circumstances and crises of everyday life make our theology real!
*You teach volumes to your children when you draw concrete between truths about God and their everyday life’s situations!
Display authenticity in your walk (2 Timothy 3:5)
2 Tim. 3:5, Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
-Blatant and unapologetic hypocrisy can be devastating to your efforts to teach God’s way of doing life to your children!
-The surest way to teach children to apply God’s truth to life’s circumstances is to it for them.
-Parenting that shows a vital relationship with God in all the joys and storms of life is irresistible to children and young people. (You are demonstrating God’s way of handling life!)
-What to do: a devotion for God personally…it’ll be contagious!
Work at a pattern of following Jesus (Joshua 24:15)
-Josh. 24:15b, but as for me and my house, WE will serve the Lord.
-Your children are not servants in your kingdom—they are servants you in God’s kingdom!
-Your goal is not to form subservient children to your wishes and desires—your goal is to teach them how to serve the Lord with you for His glory.
*The Christian life is lived in a and you are tasked with the responsibility to teach your children how to live for the Lord in that community.
*Show your children (and tell them too) that you are all in this together!
