Light in the Darkness

July 25, 2021   /   Will Hutchinson   /   Hope Church

1 John 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in
him is no darkness at all.

No light we can produce is without dark spots. Any small imperfection in the glass, the reflective mirror,
or in the fuel for the light will cause it to have shadows and dark spots. Flashlights, lightbulbs, fire, and
even our sun have dark spots because of imperfections. How can we share the beauty and perfection of
Jesus Christ when we are imperfect and full of darkness.

1. God is the light.

a. The light is the Holy Spirit in me.

b. The message is not about ME.

2. When we become centered on ourselves, we lose focus.

a. Jesus was bold in calling the disciples.

i. While Jesus was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, many people pushed to get
near Him. They wanted to hear the Word of God. 2 Jesus saw two boats on the
shore. The fishermen were not there because they were washing their nets. 3
Jesus got into a boat that belonged to Simon. Jesus asked him to push it out a
little way from land. Luke 5:1-3

b. The light we share IS BOLD.

i. Light doesn’t ask the darkness, It overcomes it. (John 1:5)

3. When God shines the light in our lives; we need to deal!

a. God has told us, thru scripture, that we could not handle the fullness of him, so he shines
into our lives a little at a time.

b. What God lights up… is what we work on.

i. No “But God, First I…”

1. Do we really want to tell the creator of the universe, the redeemer of
our sin, the all-powerful being whom we can not even understand his
beginning that he got it in the wrong order?

ii. No “I’ll get to it later”

1. We don’t know if God will come back to this moment or not. When our last
chance to say yes will be. Not knowing our Future means the time for
action is now!

c. In Luke 5, Simon said yes to Jesus and took his boat out. God won’t just leave you
hanging.

i. When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Push out into the deep
water. Let down your nets for some fish.” 5 Simon said to Him, “Teacher, we
have worked all night and we have caught nothing. But because You told me to,
I will let the net down.” 6 When they had done this, they caught so many fish,
their net started to break. 7 They called to their friends working in the other boat
to come and help them. They came and both boats were so full of fish they
began to sink. Luke 5:4-7
