The Peace of Advent from the Gospel of Luke

LBC Life Group Questions

Two Definitions

  1. How would you define the Lukan biblical understanding of “peace” using the Costa Rican metaphor in the sermon’s introduction?
  2. The Greek word from which we get the New Testament English word “peace” is ĕirēnē, which comes from a primitive verb meaning to join. The Gospel writers use the ĕirēnē to speak of peace (both figuratively and literally) as follows: Matthew (4 times); Mark (1 time); John (5 times); and Luke (14 times) together with Acts (7 times). What does this tell you about Luke’s theology of the kingdom of God when in writing to his original audience in Luke-Acts he uses the word “peace” a total of 21 times?

Two Kingdom Announcements

  1. In Luke 1:76-79 Zacharias prophecies of the coming kingdom of Jesus Messiah. How would you describe the future kingdom of Jesus on earth from this prophecy?
  2. In Luke 2:10-14 the heavenly host proclaims that the kingdom of Jesus Messiah has arrived. How would you describe the kingdom of the Lord on earth from the angels’ declaration?

Two Parallel Proclamations

  1. Compare and contrast the proclamation of the multitude of angels at the arrival of Jesus Messiah (Luke 2:10-14) with the proclamation of the multitude of disciples at the departure of Jesus Messiah (Luke 19:37-38). In other words, what topics and/or elements are common to both proclamations? Why does Luke’s gospel position the two parallel proclamations where it does?

Two Case Studies

  1. Compare and contrast the salvation (sōzō: forgiveness of sins) of the woman in Luke 7:47-50 with the salvation (sōzō: physical healing) of the woman in Luke 8:43-48. What does this tell us about the kingdom of the Lord Jesus on earth?

Two Examples

  1. What is one lesson you received from the historical and/or contemporary examples given at the end of the sermon? How would you apply the lesson(s) of the sermon “the Peace of Advent from the Gospel of Luke” to your current Christian life at Lombard Bible Church?
