SERMON NOTES:

Volume One
1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us,  2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have
delivered them to us,  3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus,  4  that you may have certainty concerning the things you have been taught. Luke 1:1-4

Volume Two
1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach,  2  until the day
when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.  3  He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God. Acts 1.1-3

“A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing
Our helper he amid the flood
of mortal ills prevailing” . . . Martin Luther

since the languages have been restored, they bring with them so bright a light and accomplish such great things that the whole world wonders and is forced to confess that we have the gospel quite as purely as the apostles had it, and that it has altogether attained to its original purity, far beyond what is was in the days of St. Jerome and St. Augustine. In short, the Holy Spirit is no fool and does nothing unadvisedly or uselessly. To the Councilmen, IV. 113-116.

“He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God” (Acts 1:3).

“It is serious matter . . . that to us of all people, it has been given to see the pure and original face of the gospel.” Misuse of the Mass, W36:228-229.

“When I If I find a nut in the text with a shell too hard to crack, I throw it on the rock (namely Christ) and I get the sweetest kernel (WA 3.12).

I. To Jerusalem 1:12 – 6:7
“So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith” (6:7).
II. To Judea and Samaria 6:8 – 9.31
“Those who had been scattered preached the word wherever they went.” “Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord” (9:31).
III. To the Gentiles 9:32 – 12:24 “But the word of God continued to increase and spread” (12:24).
IV. To Asia 13:1 – 16:5 “So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers” (16:5).
V. To Europe 16:6 – 19:20 “In this way the word of the Lord spread widely and grew in power” (19:20).
VI. To Rome 19:21 – 28:31 “Boldly and without hindrance he preached the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ” (28:31).
VII. Now!

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong” (2 Cor. 12:9).

“So the Word of God spread . . . the church . . . was strengthened and encouraged by the Holy Spirit and it
grew in numbers . . .” (6:7, 9:31).

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all
nations, and then the end will come” (Matthew 24:14).

“Luke’s purpose in The Acts of the Apostles is to narrate the triumphant progression of the gospel, best
seen in its march from Jerusalem to Rome. In the process, no force neither external nor internal, can
hinder it, as God fulfills his purpose to Jew and Gentile. Neither problems in the church, opposition from
unbelievers, nor empire can stop it. ‘Whatever the Lord pleases, he does’ (Ps. 115:3, 135:6). The key
seems to be movement . . . Jesus of Nazareth is let loose in the world, and nothing can stop him. . . . At
almost every single turn the gospel goes forth with power, nothing can stop it. Acts is programmatic for
the age of the church. Expansion is to be open ended and unhindered, even if we die in the process.”
