A Slice of Humble Pie

Luke 9:44-50

-*Humble Pie* = when you say or do something that you later have to or “eat” because you were wrong–also called “putting your foot in your mouth.”

-Whether we realize it or not, we often walk around with an elevated view of .

-Pride creeps in unawares and takes over before we ever saw it coming!

-As we follow the Lord Jesus in this life, we need to take a close look at our frame of mind and our humility level.  If we’re not careful, we’ll allow pride to our lives and hinder our usefulness for the the Lord Jesus Christ.

-Jesus points out 3 areas of the Christian life that pride can easily contaminate and I’d like you to put yourself in the place of Jesus’ disciples that day and ask yourself if pride is creeping into your own thinking.

I. Point (Luke 9:44-45)

(v.44) Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

-Jesus (addressing His disciples) emphasized again the point of why He came to this earth.

-The very central focus of the Christian life is the death, burial, & resurrection of Jesus Christ!

-If you get this point wrong, you get of Christianity wrong!

-The Gospel is what changed our life when we accepted Jesus and It is to remain the main factor in our changing life from that point on!

-1 Corinthians 1:18, For the preaching of the cross…unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

-The application question is simple: is pride keeping you from focusing on the main point of Christianity?

II. Position (Luke 9:46-48)

Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest.

-They were wrapped up in who was considered by God to be than the others–pride!

-Jesus lays out the principle in v. 48b, for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great.

-Jesus is teaching that there is no room for pride in your aspirations as a of the Lord.

-(David McKenna) As a servant loses his identity by serving others, he takes on the identity of his master.

III. Holier-than-Thou (Luke 9:49-50)

And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us.

-Notice what Jesus says in v. 50, And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

-Bottom line: Jesus doesn’t say we need to embrace those who aren’t doing just like our convictions dictate us to do it, but He is saying we need to be careful of we treat them!

-We need to be careful of letting pride produce piousness toward other believers who may not be thinking just like you or me.
