The Word of God

Knowing God Personally
2 Peter 1:16-21

How do you value the Word of God?

The word “know” or “knowledge” is used in this letter.

Before dealing with false teachers (in chapter 2), who were denying the reality of Christ’s return and His  judgment, Peter emphasizes his authority as an eyewitness of Christ’s glory – on the Mount of Transfiguration, as well as the authority of God-inspired Scripture.  In order to discern God’s will we must be grounded in His truth as revealed by the Holy Spirit and recorded in the Bible.

1. The Bible’s (v. 16a)

Christianity is a truth claim about .

John 14:6

“The New Testament was complete, or substantially complete, about AD 100, the majority of the writings being in existence twenty to forty years before this. . . . Both the authenticity and the general integrity of the books of the New Testament may be regarded as finally established.”
– F.F. Bruce, “The New Testament Documents: Are They Reliable?”

2. The Word Instructs (vv. 16b-18)

     A. account (v. 16b)

Peter had a firsthand knowledge of Jesus’ life, and he could confirm that what we know of Jesus is true.

John 21:25

     B. Supernatural (vv. 17-18)

“Six days later Jesus took Peter and the two brothers, James and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. 2 As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed so that his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. 3 Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared and began talking with Jesus.”
 Matthew 17:1-13

1 John 1:1-3

This was a holy place because Jesus was there and because His Father was there.

Exodus 3

Hebrews 1:1, 2

3. The of God’s Word (v. 19a)

The truest sense of the word “prophet” is one who spoke and wrote God’s Word

Isaiah 55:8-9

4. The of God’s Word (v. 19b)

2 Corinthians 4:4

John 8:12

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” Psalm 119:105

Revelation 22:16.

The first question you should ask when facing any decision is: Does the Bible give me any guidance?

5. The of God’s Word (vv. 20-21)

1 Peter 1:10, 11

“All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.” 2 Timothy 3:16
