Serving on Purpose

Luke 9:10-17

-Today’s passage gives us a picture of what it looks like to serve Jesus Christ .  We don’t always get it right, but we see 6 elements of serving our Lord with purpose!

I. (Luke 9:10)
And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done.

-Jesus was the Head of the mission, the Subject of the mission, the “Go-to” power behind the mission, and the One to Whom these men were to report about their work in the mission!

-We answer to a Higher call than ourselves and we’re on a greater mission than our agenda!

II. Rest (Luke 9:10)

And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida.

-Sometimes, the Gospel ministry can be very time, energy, and mind-consuming–sometimes, the most thing a person can do is rest!

III. (Luke 9:11)

And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing.

Jesus received them…spake unto them…healed them…

-Jesus shows us that interruptions are often divine interruptions that have a specific purpose from the Lord!

-We never know what God may be trying to do in certain interruptions into our schedule!

IV. Underestimation (Luke 9:12-14)

And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place. But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people. For they were about five thousand men.

-Often we are just as guilty of underestimating what the Lord is trying to do in our midst!

V. (9:14-16)

And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company. And they did so, and made them all sit down. Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude.

-Our responsibilities are quite , really–the problem is, we often justify disobedience or fail to completely obey!

-We are simply to love God and others and leave the end result in life up to God!

VI. Expectation (Luke 9:17)

And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets.

-The God Who fed more than 5,000 people with 2 fishes and 5 loaves of bread is the same God you and I serve today!

-Remember, With God all things are !

-Ephesians 3:20-21, Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

-We have a great and God.  Let’s give Him great glory by expecting great things from and through Him!

*Serving the Lord does just happen!
