The Lord’s Prayer

Matthew 6:13

”This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.”

The petition “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” has two halves, but both halves express a single thought:  life is a spiritual minefield and so we should not trust ourselves.  This is the same theme that runs through many of the psalms: self-distrust coupled with a humble dependence on God.

James 1:13

The word (in verse 13) translated “temptation” in the New International Version, is basically a neutral word in the Greek and the idea is ‘to test or prove’ but it can also mean ‘to trap,’ and from there it can be used for either ‘trial’ or ‘temptation.’

“Any educational or training program must of necessity include periodic tests for gauging progress, and the experience of taking and passing such tests can be very encouraging to the trainee. . . . God does and must test us regularly, to prove what is in us and show how far we have got.”                                                                                     -J.I. Packer

Some very practical ways

How is the cross shaping your life?

  1. We do not battle against pain, .

Suffering will make you stronger, but .

  1. Filter all your testings through .

“This isn’t fair.” “I don’t deserve this.” “This is what God gives me when I’ve been so faithful to Him?”

“I’m a terrible person.” “People have always said I’m a failure; it must be true.” “There must be something wrong with me.”

“Life is horrible.” “I don’t care anymore.” “God is against me, so I don’t want anything to do with Him anymore.”

If you treat God as Father, He will strengthen you and give you .
