Mary’s Song

Christmas Eve 2019

Luke 1:46-55

Mary’s song of praise is often referred to as the Magnificat.  That is the opening word (‘magnifies’) in the Latin.  The song reveals that even at her young age, her heart and mind were filled with the Word of God.  Her prayer pictures God as the champion of the poor, oppressed and despised.  All who have experienced God’s redemption should continually praise God for sending the Lord Jesus Christ to be our Savior.

This is a quiet song of peaceful acceptance and trust in God.

Romans 5:8

John 10:10

What is it that brings about this great change in Mary’s heart and in our life?  Answer: The truths Mary sings about.

1. God’s holiness (vv. 46-49)

Exodus 15:11

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.

Romans 3:23

2. God’s loving power (vv. 50-53)

God reverses the order of things on earth.

A. He scatters the proud. (v.51)

B. He humbles the rulers (v. 52)

C. He fills the hungry with good things (v. 53)

There is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus.” 1 Timothy 2:5

3. God’s mercy (vv. 54, 55)

For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:21
