Mentoring: Coaching Timothy

I Timothy 2:1-6

Mentoring relationships can have a tremendous impact

Paul left Timothy in Ephesus to straighten out the Church

3  As I urged you when I went into Macedonia, stay there in Ephesus so that you may command certain men not to teach false doctrines any longer 4  nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies. These promote controversies rather than God’s work–which is by faith. 1 Timothy 1:3-4 (NIV)

Paul coached Timothy to focus on Jesus

15  Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners–of whom I am the worst. 1 Timothy 1:15 (NIV)

Paul coached Timothy in ordering the Church at Ephesus:

1 Pray for everyone, especially leaders

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone– 2  for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 1 Timothy 2:1-2 (NIV)

2 Cultivate potential Church leaders

Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. 1 Timothy 3:1 (NIV)

Growing in Christ best equips you to lead

Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great: He appeared in a body, was vindicated by the Spirit, was seen by angels, was preached among the nations, was believed on in the world, was taken up in glory. 1 Timothy 3:16 (NIV)

3 Be careful not to abandon the faith

The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. 1 Timothy 4:1 (NIV)

But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12  Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:11-12 (NIV)

Let God’s word, the Holy Spirit, and the Church coach you as a leader
