Counting the Cost: David Offers a Sacrifice

March 20, 2022

2 Samuel 24:18-25 – 18That day Gad (who was a prophet of the Lord) came to David and said to him, “Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.” 19So David went up to do what the LORD had commanded him.  20When Araunah saw the king and his men coming toward him, he came and bowed before the king with his face to the ground.  21“Why have you come, my lord the king?” Araunah asked. David replied, “I have come to buy your threshing floor and to build an altar to the LORD there, so that he will stop the plague.” 22“Take it, my lord the king, and use it as you wish,” Araunah said to David. “Here are oxen for the burnt offering, and you can use the threshing boards and ox yokes for wood to build a fire on the altar. 23I will give it all to you, Your Majesty, and may the LORD your God accept your sacrifice.” 24But the king replied to Araunah, “No, I insist on buying it, for I will not present burnt offerings to the LORD my God that have cost me nothing.” So David paid him fifty pieces of silver for the threshing floor and the oxen. 25David built an altar there to the LORD and sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. And the LORD answered his prayer for the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.

Instead of merely Going through the motions” David made the DECISION to give his Best to God.

Main Point #1

We in the things that to us.

When we the best we have, it changes our lives and the of our circumstances.

1 Chronicles 21:25 – So David gave Araunah 600 pieces of gold in payment for the threshing floor.

Main Point #2

The value of our to God – is never about the – it’s always about the .

Luke 21:1-4 – 1 While Jesus was in the Temple, he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the collection box.2Then a poor widow came by and dropped in two small coins. 3“I tell you the truth,”Jesus said,“this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them.4For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.”

#3 – When we give God our – God the outcome of our .

2 Samuel 24:25 – David built an altar there to the LORD and sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. And the LORD answered his prayer for the land, and the plague on Israel was stopped.

God changes the outcome of our story – by intertwining our story with his greater narrative.

Romans 11 :17 – If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root.

Bringing our best to God – is really us giving our to God.

Giving our best to God leads to living our best life.
