The Holy Spirit Week One: The Creative Names of the Holy Spirit with Dr Elmer Towns

There are many different names of the Holy Spirit that describe His many works. Today’s creative names involve His designing and decorative work in beginning heavens and earth (Genesis 1:1). How did the world become such a spectacular place? It’s as if He didn’t design a multifunctional home for His greatest creation – humans. “The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters” (Geneses. 1:2, NLT). 

  1. WHAT THE HOLY SPIRIT DID FOR HUMANS
  1. The . The word “hovering” is a symbol emphasizing His role in giving life (Himself) to creation. The word “hovering” is a picture of a mother bird on her nest bringing  out of her eggs. 
  1. The  . “When I look at the night sky and see the work of Your fingers – the moon and the stars You set in place” (Psalm 8:3, NLT). See immensity … scope … . 
  1. The                                                                          .  “By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God’s command, that what we now see did not come from anything that can be seen” (Hebrews 11:3). Just as the Spirit put into Scriptures, He did the same for the universe. 
  1. The emphasizes the Spirit putting His life into what He makes.  “The Lord God molded man from the dust (clay) of the ground and breathed His breath () into his nostrils, and man became a living person” (Genesis 2:7, ELT). Just as we receive God’s gift of human life at our first birth, so we receive God’s at our second birth.
  1. WHAT THE HOLY SPIRIT DID FOR THE UNIVERSE
  1. The certainty of . Creation is run by laws (); the Holy Spirit put the universe together and He is the power of its laws. 
  1. A creation of . The first purpose behind a design is                                                        , after that beauty.  “The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display His craftsmanship” (Psalm 19:1, NLT).

  1. A creation of . “The Spirit of God has made me (the universe), the breath of the Almighty gives me life” (Job 33:4). 
  1. The  of life. “When You give them Your breath, life is created, and You renew the face of the earth” (Psalm 104:30). “When You take away their breath, they die” (Psalm 104:29). 
  1. The  of creation. When Jesus returns at His Second Coming, the Spirit will restore all creation to its previous glory before sin was introduced and .  “All creation … looks forward … to glorious freedom … from decay” (Romans 8:20-21, NLT). 
  1. WHAT THE HOLY SPIRIT HAS DONE FOR YOU
  1. Imagine how drab your world would be without the Holy Spirit. What has the Holy Spirit done to re-create your  and world?
  1. Imagine how meaningless your life would be without the Holy Spirit. How has the Holy Spirit added design () and decoration () to your life?
